The 19th of November every year marks Garifuna Settlement Day in Belize. The Garifuna people first arrived in Belize in 1832. Dinah and I stayed in Hopkins to see the reenactment of the landing of the Garifuna people in Belize. Each year in Belize on Garifuna Settlement Day, locals in Hopkins reenact 'The Landing' by slipping out to sea in boats, then riding into shore, waving palm fronds and banana leaves to symbolize the cassava that sustained their ancestors. The Garifuna come from a people that were on slave ships that were shipwrecked off St Vincent. Their intermarriage with the Caribs from St Vincent formed the Garifuna people. The Garifuna adopted the Carib language but kept their African musical and religious traditions. In 1795 the Garifuna people rebelled against the British and relocated to Roatan in Honduras. In 1832, many Garifuna left Honduras after a civil war there and settled in Dangriga, Belize on November 19th. Garifuna Settlement Day began to be celebrated in Dangriga in 1941.

The Garifuna language belongs to the Arawakan group of languages and has survived centuries of discrimination and linguistic domination. It is rich in tales (úraga) originally recited during wakes or large gatherings.The melodies bring together African and Amerindian elements, and the texts are a veritable repository of the history and traditional knowledge of the Garifuna, such as cassava-growing, fishing, canoe-building and the construction of baked mud houses. There is also a considerable amount of satire in these songs, which are accompanied by various drums and dances, which the spectators may join in. These traditions are still very important to the life and survival of the Garifuna people. The elders are the ones who maintain many of the ceremonies, festivals and oral traditions. In Guatemala we spent a month at the EcoEscuela Spanish Immersion School in San Andres; sights, life with a family, Lake Peten Itza, festivals, Maya sites of Yax'Ha, La Blanca, Oxtankha. We finished up back in Mexico visiting Valladolid, Majahual, and Rio Lagartos.

Edit: Thank you to everyone mentioning "The Cove". Sadly, I wasn't at the film festivals it was shown at in August 2009, and didn't know how they were captured. Like most people, I first heard about it after it gained wider publicity and went into limited theatrical release in March 2010 - two months after this video was uploaded. It gave context to what was previously a magical day, and made me wonder about the ethics organisations like Sea World (with their marine ecology and conservation programs), and where they get their animals. If I saw "The Cove" beforehand, would I have bought Evelyn this experience as a gift for her birthday? Probably not. And if you were able to play with dolphins 2 months before seeing "The Cove", you probably would have enjoyed the experience too. But what I find particularly disgusting is people who come in here criticising others like they're some kind of Cetologists who have known about "The Cove" for years when really they've just finished watching it, and are digging through old videos they've found by googling "Swimming With Dolphins" for their own sick voyeuristic pleasure. The RAF's (Royal Air Force) Regimental Band and the IAF's (Indian Air Force) Air Warrior Symphony Orchestra played together at India Gate, New Delhi on 03rd March 2012. The joint musical concert with sunset and the all lit up India Gate provided the perfect location for such a grand military show. The Indian audience enjoyed and were actually surprised when the RAF band played to the tunes of Bollywood song "Chammak Challo" from Shah Rukh Khan's film RA.One. The RAF Band was led by Major Steve Maher. RAF Regiment band is regarded to be one of the leading UK military bands with the established strength of 41 musicians and has earned a worldwide reputation for its outstanding performance. Originally formed from the Royal Air Force Coastal Command band in 1942 it has travelled extensively including tours of Europe, Canada, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Belize, Hong Kong, Iraq and South Korea. It is a regular performer at Edinburg Tattoo and as a part of Royal Air Force Massed Bands giving musical support to the Queen's Colour Squadron of the Royal Air Force Regiment. While the origin of the IAF's Air Warriors Symphony Orchestra (AWSO) dates back to June 2002. It has 76 musicians who play brass, woodwind, reed, string, electronic and percussion instruments. The band has performed at Bangkok, Berlin, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and has participated in International Music Festivals in Finland, France, Italy and Malaysia.
