| | Cities - The Real Buenos Aires 1 of 2 - BBC Travel Documentary Duration : 871 Seconds Cities - The Real Buenos Aires 1 of 2 - BBC Travel Documentary, recorded 02.10.2010 To arrive in Buenos Aires is to find oneself somewhere at once deeply familiar and entirely new. Buenos Aires is sometimes called 'the Paris of the South' With its mix of old world charm and new world edginess, Buenos Aires has an electricity about it that is hard to describe, but impossible not to notice. Argentina began as a backwater of Spain's South American colonies but by the early 20th Century had risen to become one of the richest nations in the world. The expression 'rich as an Argentine' was bandied about in Europe, as boatloads of portenos landed on the continent - often with servants in tow - to do the grand tour. The city still lays claim to the title 'Paris of the South' and more than any other Latin American capital, Buenos Aires has traditionally looked to Europe - not just Spain, but France, England, Belgium and beyond. When the money from its rich farmlands poured into the coffers of the city's wealthiest families, they built Hausmannesque boulevards and slate-roofed mansions. Potent mix Many Argentines have their roots in Europe thanks to a push for immigration in the late 19th Century. In fact you'll hear as many Italian surnames here (Maradona being undoubtedly the most famous) as you will Spanish, with plenty of Swiss, German and Russian names mixed in. It's this potent mix of cultures that lends Buenos Aires its distinctly cosmopolitan feel. It's also this mongrel ... | | Train travel ~ Long long journey ~ Enya Duration : 208 Seconds In this video you are travelling with me on a journey from France to Netherlands in October 2009. The title: Long long journey... , is not really counting for this journey. Though it lasts more than ten hours to travel from France to Netherlands, travelling by train is very relaxing and exciting at the same time, reason for why these hours go as fast as the high speed of the luxurious trains. The new French trains are fast, very very modern and comfortable! We drive through the Belgian Ardennes, in autumn: the trees have been coloured into warm red, orange and yellow ocher, and some have already lost all the leafs. On some moments you see "nothing" but some shrubs flashing by because of the high speed of the train, and because they are so close next to the rail road, or layers of the Ardennes' hill tops, where we are passing "through", and which have been opened up for the rail road. I decided not to cut those views out of the film, because it belongs to the reality, and... it is lovely to see the villages appear again after that... Travelling by train offers the opportunity to meet people, to contact, to inform, to unite. Travelling by train is one of the most excellent ecological ways to travel: that means that this way of travelling is supporting nature, environment, and so: mankind. About Ecology: en.wikipedia.orgEcology is a philosophy that includes all aspects of life - both physical and spiritual. 'Eco' is derived from the Greek word oikos, meaning to feel at home ... | | Canvas at Struise Duration : 574 Seconds In Tournée Générale, Belgian artist Jean Blaute takes along his British friend and wine devotee Ray cokes (MTV) on a refreshing road trip through the Belgian beer landscape. Very rapidly, Jean and Ray realize that beer is a frequently underestimated product: the taste palette is a lot vaster and the brew process more complex than is commonly adopted. Moreover, beer has a huge impact on several fields in our society: art, economy, folklore, gastronomy, architecture and religion have all been, however, linked in one or other manner with our Belgian beer. The two adventurers thus not only acquire necessary knowledge during their travel and own brew experiment, they discover also the many facets of the Belgian beer tale. Tonight, Jean & Ray experience an exclusive happening: they penetrate into the brewlab of Struise, where Urbain & C° develop some of the best beers in the world While this sequence is mainly a mix between English & Dutch spoken actors, we are sure many of you, who were not able to see this live, will enjoy ... | | Ambrose & his Orchestra (1) - I Travel Alone ft. Sam Browne (1934) Duration : 196 Seconds One of the greatest and most beloved London orchestras of the late 1920s through the 1940s was without doubt (Bert) Ambrose's band whose 78rpms are still found in great quantity in Belgium today . Born in the east of London in 1896, Ambrose started his career in the USA before returning to London in 1922 when he was asked to play at the Embassy Club... His band soon became known for its elegant sound and superb arrangements. Vocalists with the band included Sam Browne, Kitty Carlisle, Evelyn Dall and most famously Vera Lynn.... He played not only at the Embassy Club but also at the Mayfair Hotel (and seemed to alternate between these two venues) and recorded many sides for Brunswick, HMV and Decca... He retired from performing in 1940 but continued to make recordings.... Later on he decided to perform again but he suffered considerably from the demise of the big band era. He died in 1971. For more info on Ambrose and other great bands : www.mgthomas.co.uk The song "I travel alone" was composed by Noel Coward but was not part of any show. This recording features Sam Browne as the vocalist and was made in London on October 25th, 1934. For the video, I decided to take the title literally... It shows a train journey, the French liner "Normandie", New York : statue of Liberty, Broadway and last but not least a drive along the pacific coast and Los Angeles... | | Belgian Boat Lifts: The Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift - L'ascenseur funiculaire de Strépy-Thieu Duration : 191 Seconds The Strépy-Thieu boat lift lies on a branch of the Canal du Centre in the municipality of Le Rœulx, Hainaut, Belgium. With a height difference of 73.15 meters (240.0 ft) between the upstream and downstream reaches, it is the tallest boat lift in the world. The boat lift was designed during the Canal du Centre's modernization program in order to replace a system of two locks and four 16-meter lifts dating from 1888 to 1919. The canal itself began operations in 1879 and its locks and lifts were able to accommodate vessels of up to 300 tonnes. By the 1960s, this was no longer adequate for the new European standard of 1350 tonnes for barge traffic, and a replacement was sought. Construction of the lift commenced in 1982 and was not completed until 2002 at an estimated cost of € 160 million (then 6.4 billion BEF), but once operational, permitted river traffic of up to the new 1350-tonne standard to pass between the waterways of the Meuse and Scheldt rivers. The lift increased river traffic from 256 kT in 2001 to 2295 kT in 2006. The four older lifts, now bypassed on the original line of the Canal du Centre to the south, are still in use, but are limited to recreational traffic only. Their architectural and historical value has led them to be placed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The structure at Strépy-Thieu consists of two independent counter-weighted caissons, which travel vertically between the upstream and downstream sections. Due to the Archimedes' Principle, the ... | | Travelling Light [Tindersticks] Duration : 288 Seconds Super 8, so grainy some TV channels used the City Sickness video with this song. My favourite tindersticks film. Our second with Martin Wallace. Features Matt, our then tour manager, merchandise chap, and Ilona, who we knew from the Rough Trade shop. Also features Stuart's daughter, Sidonie again, now up on her feet. The middle eight pub scene was great fun, putting the band together from friends, getting our promoter Big Ray, to DJ. Dickon's brother plays bass. None of us appear in the film. And the end result is a joy every time I see it. Tags :Tindersticks, Travelling, Light
