Remember Belgium -- Poetry as Propaganda During the First
Duration : 3060 Seconds

In 1914 the case of Gallant Little Belgium stirred political and artistic attention and emotion all over the world. Invaded by "the Huns," the Belgians found themselves at the heart of a propaganda battle in both warring and neutral nations. The writing of war poems became part of the war effort. American poets as well joined in. Kluge Fellow Geert Buelens address the use of poetry as propaganda, using WWI poems about Belgium by poets such as ee cummings, Witter Bynner, Ford Madox Ford and prominent Russian, Italian and Scandinavian poets. Kluge Fellow Geert Buelens is from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Helen Gillet plays Le Petit Royaume by Julos Beaucarne at St. John the Divine
Duration : 87 Seconds

This beautiful melody was written by the talented and beautiful Belgian poet Julos Beaucarne. I recorded it inside of St. John the Divine; a place of inspiration I seek out every chance I get when I am in New York. This was inside of St. Martin's Chapel, one of the many chapels built inside the largest cathedral in the world. Children have sculpted sculptures around the Peace fountain outside which includes the sun, the moon, satan, a crab and 9 giraffes among other things. There is a touching tribute to the world's finest poets inside the main atrium. when I first read all the poetry quotes engraved in stone I was moved to tears. I dreamed to play inside of this place and was able to do so this year. I am grateful for words and poets. Thankyou to Julos Beaucarne for this truly amazing song and all of his fine words.

On the 26 September 2011, the European Day of Languages, EUNIC in Brussels organised a 'flash mob' dance event, with Flash Mob Dance Belgium, in four Brussels metro stations to highlight its Transpoesie project. The project, by EUNIC (EU National Institutes for Culture) in Brussels in co-operation with the STIB, sees poems displayed in their original language and in translation by poets from all across Europe in posters throughout the metro network.
