New Belgium Brewing's Melyssa Glassman - Snow Conference - TransWorld Business
Duration : 3209 Seconds

The final day's keynote speaker was New Belgium Brewing Creative Director Melyssa Glassman. New Belgium Brewing has grown into a global phenomenon based not only on the quality of its beers, but also on its engaging marketing strategies that connect customers on a level that makes them thirsty for some brews, but more importantly passionate about the brand's message. What began as a small brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado is now the 3rd largest craft brewer in the country. But they keep it local through events, advocacy and sales reps known as Beer Rangers. Glassman discussed the company's marketing strategies and some hilarious lessons for attendees to take back to their brands and build not just customers, but lifelong brand ambassadors.

Remember Belgium -- Poetry as Propaganda During the First
Duration : 3060 Seconds

In 1914 the case of Gallant Little Belgium stirred political and artistic attention and emotion all over the world. Invaded by "the Huns," the Belgians found themselves at the heart of a propaganda battle in both warring and neutral nations. The writing of war poems became part of the war effort. American poets as well joined in. Kluge Fellow Geert Buelens address the use of poetry as propaganda, using WWI poems about Belgium by poets such as ee cummings, Witter Bynner, Ford Madox Ford and prominent Russian, Italian and Scandinavian poets. Kluge Fellow Geert Buelens is from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

White King, Red Rubber, Black Death
Duration : 6575 Seconds

The Collected Malcolm X: malcolmxfiles.blogspot.com The Congo Free State was privately controlled by Leopold II, King of the Belgians through a non-governmental organization, the Association internationale africaine. Leopold was the sole shareholder and chairman, who increasingly used it for rubber, copper and other minerals in the upper Lualaba River basin (though it had been set up on the understanding that its purpose was to uplift the local people and develop the area). The state included the entire area of the present Democratic Republic of the Congo and existed from 1885 to 1908. The Congo Free State eventually earned infamy due to the increasingly brutal mistreatment of the local peoples and plunder of natural resources, leading to its abolition and annexation by the government of Belgium in 1908. Under Leopold II's administration, the Congo Free State became one of the greatest international scandals of the early twentieth century. The report of the British Consul Roger Casement led to the arrest and punishment of white officials who had been responsible for killings during a rubber-collecting expedition in 1903 (including one Belgian national for causing the shooting of at least 122 Congolese people). The loss of life and atrocities inspired literature such as Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, and outcries even from upholders of the colonial mission like Winston Churchill. One view is that the forced labour system directly and indirectly eliminated 20% of the ...

Belgium: Is Tintin racist? | European Journal
Duration : 281 Seconds

Tintin is a national hero in Belgium, but he is about to have to answer to charges of racism, colonialism and arrogance. A Congolese man living in Belgium has filed suit, and wants the edition about Tintin's adventures in the Congo banned. The book, first published in 1931, is indeed full of racist clichés. Tintin's creator Hergé distanced himself from it in his later years. The controversial parts have been removed from more recent printings but you can still find them in collectors'editions. Tintin's defenders say the comic books do not contain anything more offensive that what you would find in most literature, and you cannot ban everything. The controversy stems from the fact that the Congolese people were treated brutally by their Belgian colonial rulers. It is still a very sensitive issue in Belgium.
