The Het Steen, which means the Stone in Dutch, is Antwerp's oldest structure. This renowned castle was built in the early 13th century, during Belgium's Medieval Age. The castle has had a long and varied history, changing functions and masters throughout the years. The Het Steen has played the role of a fortress, a prison, and is currently a museum. Although the castle was built for the Dukes of Antwerp, it spent more time housing prisoners. High walls, turrets, towers, and pennants make the Het Steen a classic castle. Today, it is home to Antwerp's museums of archaeology and maritime history. | | Yorkshire Trench & Dugout site, Boesinge, Ieper, Belgium Duration : 427 Seconds Tour of the Yorkshire tranch and dugout site at Boesinge, near Ieper, Belgium. Discovered in the centre of an industrial estate, this relatively small section of original trench and underground dugout was excavated and preserved by a group of volunteers called the Diggers. Opened in 2003, the site is difficult to find, small compared to Sanctuary Wood and like the Trenches of Death near Diksmuide, rebuilt using concrete sand bags. However, the effort to find the site is well worth it and even its location, surrounded by warehouses, industrial units and wind turbines, strangely adds to the poignancy: if the Germans had won the war, would all this be here? | | The SS Londonier & The SS Azemmour Duration : 76 Seconds The Hants & Wight Trust For Maritime Archaeology in collaboration with similar organisations in France and Belgium are working on a programme of surveys of underwater archaeological sites within the 'common waters of the three countries. The objective of the project is to develop a multilingual database of the information gathered that will be hosted online at the project website which is currently being created and will soon be accessible at www.atlas2seas.eu. The programme of the surveys has an 'international' element such that the wrecks had some common element to associate between the countries such as a french or belgium ship wreck in british waters. The dives undertaken on the Azemmour and the Londinier were on both cases in very poor light conditions so the video footage is best described as limited in value but maybe the end result has a certain atmospheric feel! The french steamer SS Azemmour bound for Nantes from London with a cargo of steal pipes was torpedoed by UB 59 at 5 am on the morning of 20th. March 1918. She sank in four minutes. She lies in 40m of water. Seven days earlier the SS Londonier a Belgium cargo ship under charter to the French government had been torpedoed in a surface attack by UC 71. She lies in 40m of water.
