On Wednesday 19th September, the Commission has presented a framework for the EU's animal health and welfare measures over the next 6 years (2007 -- 2013). Based on feedback from an extensive consultation launched in 2004, the new animal health strategy focuses on issues inextricably linked to animal health, such as public health, food safety and animal welfare. Shot on location in Belgium, bird flu case study plus interviews with key figures in animal health sector: Three years ago a Belgian chicken farm located in an area affected by bird flu was forced to destroy its poultry house. The owners have now started again after putting in place strict bio-safety measures: change of clothing and shoes, disinfection of shoes, isolation zones, double doors, etc... These and others are necessary measures on all farms where animals are bred. They help prevent outbreaks and side effects, such as financial losses. This video clip shows a chimpanzee in the Antwerp Zoo, Belgium, using a stick to attempt to reach for hidden food, and succeeding. The primatologist Jane Goodall's pioneering research in the1960's in Gombe Stream National Park, Tanzania, led to the discovery that chimps use tools. The chimp can be seen selecting the most adequate stick needed for the task at hand. Intelligence at its best. FIlmed by Suzanne Fredericq in June 2010 with an iphone 3GS.

I took this video of some very happy hippos at the Antwerp, Belgium zoo. The baby hippo is having fun running in and out of the water. I'm glad the baby didn't run over the ducks in their enclosure. It's a long video. Later on (after I shot this video), the hippos were called in by the zoo keepers to be washed off and fed. The animals are very well cared for and happy at this zoo. Bravo to the Anwerp zoo staff. I had fun visiting. Enjoy, and comment below.

Intro to the animated TV series "The Animals of Farthing Wood", based on the book of the same name - and subsequent books - by Colin Dann. A venture of the European Broadcasting Union, with production duties carried between the UK's BBC and Telemagination, German studio Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) and France's La Fabrique. When Farthing Wood is threatened with destruction via human development, the animals hold a meeting in Badger's den, when Toad, before thought lost arrives to tell them of a nature reserve called White Deer Park which he discovered on his travel back to his birthplace. The animals agree to travel to this Park, pledging an oath of mutual protection to eachother, but even with Toad as their guide and wise Fox leading them, the quest is full of dangers. Three series of thirteen episodes where made, with the second and third dealing with life in the Park for Fox and company. The series rights are retained by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
