Bruges, Belgium: History and Sweet Surprises
Duration : 154 Seconds

In the 14th century, Bruges was an economic powerhouse with a population matching London's. When its sea trade dried up in the 16th century the economy collapsed, but today tourism, and chocolate shops, have rejuvenated this uniquely well-preserved gothic city. Belgium: a small country... so GREAT in History
Duration : 902 Seconds

Sometimes you'll find foreigners who, with a lot of irony -and contempt?- towards Belgium, will ask "but... was there a famous Belgian...?" The answer, of course, is YES. This video is just a little harvest on the many Belgians who have made History. It wouldn't be easy to find such an amount of celebrities in a small territory of just 30.000 square kilometers (something like Catalonia, in Europe, or the State of Maryland, in America). Belgium, a small country... but so GREAT in History.

Rexisme and Leon Degrelle
Duration : 153 Seconds

Rexisme was a nationalist Catholic social movement in Belgium begun by Leon Degrelle. It had some electoral success and popularity over Europe. After the Nazis took over Belgium and the surrender of King Leopold III, Leon Degrelle joined with the Nazis to lead the Walloon Belgian volunteers in the war against the Soviets Union. Degrelle won many medals for combat excellence and was Hitler's favorite. After the Allies won Degrelle was judged a traitor to Belgium but escaped to exile in Spain where he lived the rest of his life supported and protected by Francisco Franco.

Gent, City of Arts and History
Duration : 185 Seconds

Short overview of the historical city center of Gent (Belgium), prominent Flemish Arts City and home to Belgium's largest University, nominated third most authentic historical destination worldwide according to a poll on 280 eminent academic experts initiated by the Society's Center for Sustainable Destinations and published in the prestigious National Geographic Traveler Magazine, known for its attractive photography and in-depth travel journalism, Ghent appears preeminently on the list, ranking third on 109 of the most authentic travel destinations worldwide with a score of 81 as the only Belgian city to comply with the strict criteria of historical authenticity and uniqueness as well as the ability to harmonize a rich cultural heritage with a lively local community. Ghent is preceded only by Austria's Wachau Valley and the area around the Rideau Canal in Ontario, Canada. Ghent is, however, the highest ranking city on the list. This is praise indeed as Ghent has done better than such prestigious destinations as Lyon, York, Dublin, Istanbul, Cape Town and Munich. The report further highlights: "An interesting range of cultural experiences: churches, medieval castle, museums and rich painting collections, well-preserved and -presented." "A gloriously eclectic city, with an excellent mix of old and new buildings. Needs to work on interpretation and signing to explain and thus help conserve its treasures. Much improved fabric." "Unlike its neighbour Bruges, Ghent has ...

"The Comical History of Brussels" Nklenske's photos around Brussels, Belgium (photography)
Duration : 96 Seconds

Preview of Nklenske's blog at TravelPod. Read the full blog here: www.travelpod.com This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Brussels, Belgium Entry Title: "The Comical History of Brussels" Entry: "Europe has a lengthy history of literary prominence and stature. Paris has the Hunchback of Notre Dame, England its Sherlock Holmes and Prague the literary legend of Kafka. But Brussels' literary scene, on the other hand, is a complete joke. No really- It's literally quite funny. What Brussels lacks in Shakespeare, Joyce or Pope it makes up in floppy eared dogs, mustachioed Vikings, shadow chasing cowboys, an adventurous boy with an easily excitable sailor sidekick and, well... lots of little blue Smurfs. The History of Comics in Brussels From a country roughly the size of New Jersey has come an unprecedented amount of comic creativity- A level that has defined the genre from the industry's golden age to its present day renaissance. At the center of the Belgian comic culture is Brussels, the self-proclaimed comic strip capital of the world. From such international icons as Herge's Tintin and Peyo's Smurfs to the multitude of modern titles currently cluttering the comic store shelves, according to legendary comic writer and organizer of the annual Comics Fest Alain de Kuyssche, one thing remains the same: "Everyone of them gets their start in Brussels." Alain is the authority on the Brussels' comic book culture. Not ...

Duration : 658 Seconds

www.lulu.com A remarkable and interesting historical time document. The young single Belgian King Baudouin visiting the impressive former Belgian Colony Congo (later Zaire) in 1955. The King is received as a god. Only five years later, the Colony gets its Independency in 1960, which will lead the Big Country into the era of Apocalypse. Original documentary of A.Cauvin; "Bwana Kitoko" (Handsome Man) became restored after 50 years by the Belgian Flemish State TV, related to the 50th anniversary of Congo's Independency. He primarily plays as an attacking midfielder and a winger. Hazard is known for his creativity, speed, and technical ability. He has earned critical acclaim for his playing style, which has led to the media and players drawing comparisons to FIFA World Player of the Year winners Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Hazard is a two-time winner and the reigning Ligue 1 UNFP Young Player of the Year becoming the first non-French player to win the award, as well as the first player to win the award twice. International career Eden has played for various Belgian national youth teams, such as the under-17 and under-19 teams. Antwerpen Central Station • Belgium
Duration : 164 Seconds

Antwerpen-Centraal (Antwerp Central) is the name of the main railway station in the Belgian city of Antwerp. The station is operated by the national railway company NMBS/SNCB. History and architecture: The original station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905 as a replacement for the original terminus of the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp Railway. The stone clad terminus buildings, with a vast dome above the waiting room hall were designed by Louis Delacenserie and the vast (185 metres long and 44 metres high) iron and glass trainshed by Clement van Bogaert. The viaduct into the station is also a notable structure designed by local architect Jan Van Asperen. The station is now widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium[citation needed], although the extraordinary eclecticism of the influences on Delacenserie's design had led to a difficulty in assigning it to a particular architectural style. In WG Sebald's novel Austerlitz an ability to appreciate the full range of the styles that might have influenced Delacensiere is used to demonstrate the brilliance of the fictional architectural historian who is the novel's protagonist. In 2009 the American magazine Newsweek judged Antwerpen-Centraal the world's fourth most beautiful station. Expansion for high-speed trains: In 1998 large-scale reconstruction work began to convert the station from a terminus to a through station. A new tunnel has been excavated between Berchem station in the south ...
