That Word (That N word) Speaks to the concept of all that word embodies. I wrote it at a time when they were those who sought to use the word for good and those who thought that it could not be. This poem was inspired from the fact that I, on first glance thought that it was ok to use the word as a measure of taking it back, as a form of self empowerment and I thought too that because of the fact that my country Barbados' population is made up of mostly Afro Caribbean people (as opposed to other places like the US and UK) have and therefore we were in a unique position to use the word. It was through the love an kindness of a lady who I have much love and respect for that showed me that it is still a form of disrespect even if i do it to myself. Secondly and most importantly, the word still has negative effects on those who have gone(when you say that word whether intentionally or unintentionally it refers to a period of person who were disrespected through the use of that word). These same people are the ones whose struggle paved the way for me to be here and free. So as a tribute to them as an apology to them I wrote this.

Mahalia from the group NexCyx advertises the Barbados Government Information Services' event called 'Love, Poetry & Song' being held at the Barbados Museum and Historical Society on Saturday, February 18th, 2012 at 6:00 pm We are asking for a donation to assist the Barbados HIV Food Bank, of at least $5.00 and two non perishable food items. There will be an open mic session on the night so budding poets and singers are encouraged to come and sign up and give some love.
