Island Fashion - Barbados & Caribbean Culture - On Voyage.tv
Duration : 486 Seconds

The Simon Peter Fashion boutique in Bridgetown, Barbados is the place to go for unique island fashions from cocktail dresses and beach cover-ups to casual lounge wear. Meet the celebrated designers themselves, Simon Foster and Peter Bowen and get an inside look at their creative process from start to finish. Working together for over 20 years, Foster and Bowen create original patterns influenced by the Caribbean to produce eclectic fashions boasting animal prints and tropical color. After Foster makes the patterns and cuts the fabrics, Bowen paints them by hand, making each piece an original and almost impossible-to-replicate design. At the workshop see how a swatch of plain white chiffon fabric transforms into a vibrant lime green. Making their fashions more of an art form, they recognize the versatility of their one-of-a-kind island styles.

Carnival Barbados 2007
Duration : 150 Seconds

Cool Video Slideshow of the barbados carnival 2007 created by donald solins of donleemanstudios Inc, This Carnival is also called Crop Over, a five-week summer festival, is Barbados' most popular and colourful festival. It's origins can be traced back to the 1780's, a time when Barbados was the world's largest producer of sugar. At the end of the sugar season, there was always a huge celebration to mark the culmination of another successful sugar cane harvest - the Crop Over celebration. As the sugar industry in Barbados declined, so too did the Crop Over festival and in the 1940's the festival was terminated completely. However, the festival was revived in 1974 and other elements of Barbadian culture were infused to make the extravaganza that exists today ..... an event that attracts thousands of people from across the globe. Barbados Landship ~ Richard Layne
Duration : 269 Seconds

The Barbadian Landship movement is an informal organization that mimics the British navy organization and engages in social activities. Landship began in 1837 and was founded in Britton's Hill in Seamen's Village. The structure of the Landship organization mirrors the structure of the British navy, with a "ship" which is connected to a "dock" (a wooden house similar to a chattel house), and leaders known as Lord High Admiral, Captain, Boatswain and other navy ranks. Each unit is named like a typical navy ship and may include actual names of British ships or places. Landship performances symbolize and reflect the passage of ships through rough seas. Parades, jigs, hornpipes, maypole dances and other music and dance types are a part of the Landship Society's celebrations. The Council of the Barbados Landship Association regulates the movement. Captain Vernon Watson of the Landship, recalls that in the early days there was a landship in every parish, with great interest among young Barbadians. The Landship, which is a land interpretation of what occurs on a seagoing vessel, was a popular form of merriment and entertainment for villagers and persons who worked on the plantations. Its structure mirrors the British navy, with each unit named like a typical navy ship and may include actual names of British ships or places. Admiral Watson became actively involved in the movement in 1972 when he noticed a state of growing lawlessness among young people in his district and felt ...
