Barbados By Locals™ - History at The George Washington House
Duration : 121 Seconds

ISM created the Barbados By Locals™ series to provide you a quick look at Barbados through the eyes of those who know it best. John Cole, President of the Barbados National Trust, tells the amazing story of George Washington's only travel outside the United States, and his time spent on Barbados as a young man at what is now the George Washington House. ISM specializes in travel and lifestyle marketing for clients like Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Emirates airline, American Express Travel, and Best Western Hotels. We created the idea "The Authentic Caribbean" as a way to define and promote Barbados, our former client. Last fall, on a visit, we created and shot this series for them on our own nickel with famous Bajan photographer and videographer Ronnie Carrington. We didn't want these great stories to go to waste. So here they are. If you haven't been, you owe yourself a visit to Barbados. It really is The Authentic Caribbean.

damien dempsey to hell or barbados
Duration : 470 Seconds

This is the shocking, previously untold story of over 50000 Irish men, women and children who were transported to Barbados and Virginia between 1652 and 1659. The motivation for the initial transportation of the Irish was expressed by King James I of England: "Root out the Papists and fill it [Ireland] with Protestants." From a search that began in the library of the Barbados Museum and Historical Society and its files on Irish slaves, Sean O'Callaghan for the first time documents the history of their transportation, the conditions in which they lived on the plantations and their rebellions in Barbados. To Hell or Barbados manages to put a few names and faces on those otherwise anonymous victims of slavery. Excerpted from To Hell or Barbados: The Ethnic Cleansing of Ireland by Sean O'Callaghan.

St. Nicholas Abbey Plantation House - Barbados
Duration : 442 Seconds

Built in 1658 St. Nicholas Abbey is one of Barbados' oldest surviving plantations. Over 400 acres of rolling sugar cane fields in the parish of St. Peter, it features a Jacobean style of architecture which was unusual for a Caribbean home. Today it's preserved and rum is still bottled from cane squeezed/ground at the site.

Barbados / east of the Caribbean Sea
Duration : 177 Seconds

Barbados , situated just east of the Caribbean Sea, is a West Indian continental island-nation in the western Atlantic Ocean. After a brief claim by Spain in 1492 and later Portugal,Barbados became a colony and protectorate of the United Kingdom for over three centuries. The country currently maintains Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Located at roughly 13° North of the equator and 59° West of the prime meridian, it is considered a part of the Lesser Antilles. Its closest island neighbours are Martinique, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent & the Grenadines to the west. To the south lies Trinidad and Tobago—with which Barbados now shares a fixed official maritime boundary—and also the South American mainland. Barbados's total land area is about 430 square kilometres (166 square miles), and is primarily low-lying, with some higher in the country's interior. The highest point in Barbados is Mount Hillaby in the parish of Saint Andrew. The geological composition of Barbados is of non-volcanic origin, predominantly limestone-coral. After the break of South America from Africa in the Mesozoic, a reef formed. During the Cenozoic, as both the Caribbean and South American plates moved westward, the two plates impacted and pressed this reef upward.Barbados is part of a North Atlantic Ocean submarine mountain range located to the east of the Windward Islands. This range stretches from its close proximity of Puerto Rico in the north, to a south-easterly direction toward Venezuela ...

Barbados (Ichirouganaim-Arawakans)
Duration : 592 Seconds

It is felt that the name the Caribs call Barbados, Ichirouganaim, suggests an African mixture in pre-Columbian Barbados. The name of the linguist mentioned in the video is Dr. Allsopp. The two groups of Amerindians are the Caribs, which I might have pronounced, Aribs, and the Arawakans. The names of the islands I had difficulty prounouncing that were compaired to Ichirouganaim are: Barbuda:Wahomoni. St.Kitts:Liamuiga. Antigua:Waladli. Nevis:Walie. Monsterrat:Alliwagana. Gaudeloupe:Couchahahalalwa. Dominica:Waitukubuli. Martinique:Wanacaera. St.Lucia:Iwanalao. St.Vincent:Iouloumain: Grenada:Camaogne. The Amerindians just written seem to be Carib. It was not clear from the script. But since the Arawakan word for Martinique is Madaninna, I think, those names previously mentioned could be Carib.
