A Barbadian tradition whose origins date back to the early colonial period of the island, this harvest festival, and its humble beginnings on the sugar cane plantations in 1688, has swelled from a simple celebration to mark the end of the growing season into an annual two month event that rivals Carnival in Brazil and Trinidad. From the very beginning of the Crop Over Festival through to Kadooment Day, the island is transformed in to one big party. At the center of the festivities are the Calypso competitions, where local artists battle it out on stage, with each participant working to sway the audience in their favor with their intoxicating rhythms and expressive lyrics. Ultimately, these calypsonians are vying for the highly coveted Calypso Monarch title or to be crowned as the People's Monarch or Party Monarch. Another wildly popular event rich with the spirit of local culture is the Cohobblopot Festival, which blends dance, drama and music with the crowning of the King and Queen of costume bands. But the climax of the festival is Kadooment Day. Celebrated on the first Monday of every August, Kadooment Day is a massive street party that features a variety of Kadooment bands that are all dressed in vibrant, colorful and elaborate outfits that represent a particular theme. Each band of revelers begins the morning in the National Stadium, then proceeds down to the Spring Garden Highway accompanied by the pulsating rhythms of calypso music. The Tropitonics performed at the Caribbean Days Festival held at Waterfront Park in North Vancouver, BC, Canada. It only took a minute or two until the area in front of the stage was full of people dancing. It is hard not to feel the rythym these guys drum out on their steel pans and saxophone. My understanding is that this group has been performing together for 20-odd years and it shows. The lead vocalist is Timmy who is originally from Barbados. The girl on stage left of im is his daughter (name unknown). The saxophonist is Ron and he owns and operates a flag shop located on Columbia Street in the City of New Westminster. Ron is originally from St. Vincent. They are available for private functions and parties as well as big festivals, which they regularily attend here in BC.

Filmed on a trip I took in '09 with a Samsung NV24HD for most shots and a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 for the closeups. Barbados is a lovely little island nation, 21 miles long by 14 miles wide at its widest point. It is politically stable and economically successful, and the quality of education in Barbados is among the highest in the world. These three things combine to make Barbados one of the safest if not the safest destination in the Caribbean, and it does this without having to be divided into tourist areas and local areas. Everyone can mix and mingle anywhere and at any time in Barbados. Barbados has been blessed with an excellent groundwater source, and unlike many other tropical destinations, you can drink the water straight from the tap. Crime in Barbados is low, and violent crime even lower. The same basic precautions should be taken in Barbados as would need to be taken in any other place. The locals are called Barbadians or more commonly Bajans. The majority are of African descent, followed by a white english minority and a small south and east asian minority. The Barbadian landscape is relatively flat, though there are some hilly areas concentrated on the east side of the island. Vegetation is lush and tropical. Ecosystems that can be found in Barbados include forests, jungles, grasslands, a few wetlands, scrubland, and farmland.
