| | The National Poet of Bangladesh Duration : 180 Seconds Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in the village of Churulia in the Burdwan District of Bengal (now located in the Indian state of West Bengal).[2] He was born in a Muslim family who is second of three sons and a daughter, Nazrul's father was the imam and caretaker of the local mosque and mausoleum. Nazrul's mother was Zaheda Khatun. Nazrul had two brothers, Kazi Shahebjan and Kazi Ali Hussain, and a sister, Umme Kulsum. Nicknamed Dukhu Mia (Sad Man), Nazrul began attending the maktab — the local religious school run by the mosque — where he studied the Qur'an and other scriptures, Islamic philosophy and theology. His family was devastated with the death of his father in 1908. At the young age of ten, Nazrul began working in his father's place as a caretaker to support his family, as well as assisting teachers in school. He later became the muezzin at the mosque, leading the community prayers.[3][4] Attracted to folk theatre, Nazrul joined a leto (travelling theatrical group) run by his uncle Bazle Karim. Working and travelling with them, learning acting, as well as writing songs and poems for the plays and musicals.[2] Through his work and experiences, Nazrul began learning Bengali and Sanskrit literature, as well as Hindu scriptures such as the Puranas. | | Bangladeshi national poet Kazi Nazrul's revolutionary "Bidrohi" poem Translated to "Rebel Warrior" ! Duration : 388 Seconds Rebel Warrior song was inspired by the poem Bidrohi, translated from Bengali as "The Rebel", and written by Bangladeshi national poet Kazi Nazrul during the 1920s. Rebel Warrior appears on British musical group Asian Dub Foundation's first released cd, Facts and Fictions. Kazi Nazrul was a Bangladeshi poet, patriot and composer. Kazi Nazrul wrote Bidrohi as a call to arms of those oppressed in India by the British and a call for unity between Muslims and Hindus. Nazrul's poem politically and metaphorically called for Indians to oppose the British colonialism, by physically taking the government back and by mentally removing the imitation of British ideals and ideas from the country and returning to more traditional ways. His poem was the first aggressive poem published against colonialism and it was immediately successful and popular both with Muslims and Hindus because of its dynamic and forceful quality, which encouraged citizens to act against the colonial system which caused them so much destitution. In his quest to unify India, Nazrul attempted to make both Hindus and Muslims overlook their internal issues with each other and instead fight against the British. Kazi Nazrul went on to write more poems, as well as the first Bengali protest music, though he was later arrested for his outspoken beliefs, becoming one of the most important men in the Indian independence movement. | | Nirmalendu Goon -- Ota Kichhu Noy (Bangla Kobita) || Recited by Shimul Mustafa Duration : 157 Seconds Ota Kichhu Noy, a beautiful love poem by Nirnalendu Goon, one of the leading poets of Bangladesh. Nirmalendu Goon (Bangla: নির্মলেন্দু গুণ) (born 1945) is a Bangladeshi poet, and one of the most popular poets in Bangladesh, lauded by many for his accessible verse in an age where Bangla poetry has become increasingly complex. Nirmalendu Goon was born in Barhatta of Netrokona, Bangladesh. Goon was one of the few people who openly protested Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's assassination in 1975 in a period when even mentioning Mujib was considered dangerous. His first book of poetry was published in 1970. Since then he has published forty-five collections of poetry and twenty collections of prose. Part of the generation of poets of 1960s, Goon's poetry contains stinging criticism of the nouveau-rich and a touching description of the contrasting fate of the masses. A love of freedom and faith in the human spirit also permeates many of his poems. An avowed Marxist, Goon has also written poems urging an upheaval of the poor against the rich. He also has written a number of poems on important personalities, including Rabindranath, Sheikh Mujib, Lenin, Shakti Chattopadhyay and others.
