Added to their collection are rhinos, lions and hyenas—the first of the flood of new animals to be introduced, with many more to come. Bangladesh's main zoo, the Dhaka Zoo, recently welcomed four new species to its collection as part of its attempt to attract more visitors. A pair of white lions, white rhinoceros, and hyenas joined the zoo from South Africa. The curator of the zoo, says more animals are coming to Dhaka. [ABM Shahidullah, Curator of Zoo]: "At the moment, we have about 1600 animals and 160 species of birds in Dhaka Zoo. Now we are importing new animals. Recently we brought 2 rhinoceros, 2 white lions, 2 striped hyenas and a spotted hyena from South Africa. Very soon, 12 more animals will arrive from South Africa, like zebras, giraffes and a Greater Kudu. From Ivory Coast, we are going to get chimpanzees, and from other countries, we will get more animals and about 270 birds." 40 new species of animals will be added to the zoo by June 2013, according to the government. Visitors say they're excited by the new species on offer. A pair of white lions, white rhinoceros, and hyenas joined the zoo from South Africa. ABM Shahidullah, the curator of the zoo, said more animals are coming to Dhaka zoo. "At the moment we have about 1600 animals and birds of 160 species in the Dhaka zoo. Now we are importing more new animals for the Dhaka zoo. Recently we brought two rhinoceros, two white lions, two striped hyenas and a spotted hyena from South Africa. Very soon, 12 more animals will arrive from South Africa, like zebras, giraffes and a Greater Kudu. From the Ivory Coast we are going to get chimpanzees and from other countries we will get more animals and about 270 birds," he said. The government said 40 new species of animals will be added to the zoo by June 2013. Visitors said they were excited by the new offerings. "When I found out that a few new animals arrived at the zoo, we came here to see the white rhino, and the white lion, and we are watching them as a family." visitor Abdul Matinsaid. The zoo is located on a sprawling 75 hectares land in Mirpur on the outskirts of Bangladesh capital Dhaka.

March 1997 In the world's most crowded country, Bangladesh, it's hard to imagine there's any room for nature. But we discover a unique relationship between man and beast. Crashing around in a log box, two otters in rope harnesses are desperate to get to their food. A fisherman lifts the lid and out they dive to munch on the fishtails scattered outside their wooden cage. Bengali fishermen use these otters to herd fish into their nets. Every year Bengali menfolk bid their families farewell and sail downstream to catch their fish. With a sharp smack on the bottom, the otters are dispatched into the water and told to swim for their keep! More often than not, they get caught up in the nets and incur verbal abuse from their masters. Migratory bird Birds that visit the Bangladesh territory periodically, specially in winter. Although migration occurs among other animals like certain insects, fishes, reptiles and mammals, in no other group is it so extensive and prevalent as it is among birds. Birds may be classified according to their migratory status in a given area. Four major groups are recognized: 1. permanent residents; 2. summer residents or summer visitors; 3. winter residents or winter visitors; and 4. transient visitants or passage migrants. Transient visitants include all the species that pass through a locality, usually twice a year: once in the spring, on their way to their breeding grounds, and again in the fall, on their way to their wintering grounds. Migratory behaviour occurs among many different groups of land and water birds. Migration occurs at specific times of the day. Birds that depend on vegetational cover and that are weak fliers are nocturnal migrants; eg, cuckoos, thrushes, wrens, etc. Birds that are fast fliers, that live in the open, or that capture their food on the wing migrate primarily by day; eg, hawks, swallows, shrikes, etc. Some large birds migrate by both day and night; eg, loons, geese, and many waders. Most birds that migrate to Bangladesh come from the mountainous northern parts of the subcontinent, namely the Himalayas and beyond.
