It is a part of the Dhaka Division. Faridpur District has a population of over 1.7 million people and is situated on the banks of the Padma river (Lower Ganges). Famous for its jute fields, which are considered to produce the finest raw jute, and aristocratic zamindar families, the district was a focal point for political movements in Bengal during the rule of the British Empire and the early days of the Pakistan era. It produced some of the most prominent politicians and cultural figures of Bengal. One of the most Climate Vulnerable Area of Bangladesh, where people are living day by day with no form of sustainable medium. River Bank Erosion or Destruction is regular. People are left Homeless and when the river bank forms again only the most politically powered can claim it. Where River Bank Breakage/ Erosion is regular, People are left homeless, no proper medical facility is available or security.

"I don't want to make any trouble for the Sector Commanders' Forum. That's why, I resigned," Rashid, also the president of Destiny-2000 Ltd, told The Daily Star over phone. Rashid sent his resignation letter through his messenger to the office of sector forum Chief Air-Vice Marshall (retd) AK Khandaker. His resignation came following a number of reports published in different newspapers recently, brining allegation against him that he has been using the forum for the business of Destiny-2000 Ltd, a multi level marketing (MLM) company, which is accused of illegal banking and other irregularities. A Bangladesh Bank inquiry recently found proof of illegal banking by Destiny Multipurpose Co-operative Society, a sister concern of Destiny. Illegal banking by the company is creating disorder in the country's financial sector, said the BB probe report. The central bank investigation has found that the company is involved in banking activities -- from deposit collection to lending -- illegally. Bangladesh's business booms as nations from Europe to Asia struggle with the global economic crisis. The middle class's appetite for consumption in this Asian country is boosting the country's economy. Statistics show that 30 million people make up the middle income bracket; this is more than the population of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark combined. Atiur Rahman, the governer of the Bangladesh Bank, told Al Jazeera, "In a decade or so we will be one of the 30 largest economies of the world, and one should keep that in mind. It is not the size of the country that matters, it's the population and it's a very entrepreneurial population, and there lies our strength." Despite only one per cent direct foreign investment, the country's GDP is growing at the rate of six per cent a year. The rising middle class is investing heavily in the stock market and in domestic businesses. It is they who are behind the economic growth. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports from Dhaka.
