"Bahrain: Political Development in Modernizing Society" by Emile Nakhleh-Epilogue-12-19-2011
Duration : 1467 Seconds

www.presstv.com In this edition of the show we discuss the book: Bahrain: Political Development in a Modernizing Society, written by Emile Nakhleh. The book is a study of political development in Bahrain during the first five years after its independence in 1971. It is based on field research done by the author as the first senior Fulbright scholar in that country. The book was banned in Bahrain for 30 years but was allowed to be published in Arabic in that country in 2006. The study focuses on the tribal structure of Bahraini society and the rule of a minority Sunni government by al-Khalifa family over a largely disenfranchised Shia majority. To examine the making of the new state, the book analyzes the nature and characteristics of the Bahraini tribal society, the educational system of modern Bahrain, the nature of the political system, and popular demands for participation in decision making.

PART 2 www.youtube.com A society, or a human society, is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification and/or dominance patterns in subgroups.

Head of the Bahrain Nursing Society Tortured
Duration : 354 Seconds

Among the medics sentenced to 15 years in prison is Roula Al-Saffar, the head of the Bahrain Nursing Society, who spent over four months in custody before her court proceedings began. She studied at Widener University in Pennsylvania and at the University of North Texas. She also worked for many years as a nurse at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. She was interviewed by Human Rights First's Brian Dooley (seen in the top right hand corner of the screen) via Skype. Like many other civilians targeted during the government crackdown on peaceful protests, the medics were tried in a military court. Many were held in incommunicado detention for several weeks without access to lawyers or family. They claim their confessions were extracted under torture.

The Unethical Fabrication of Truths by the Bahrain Medical Society
Duration : 159 Seconds

The Urgent Press Release by the Bahrain Medical Society and the Bahrain Dental Society (Thursday 17th February 2011) stated that: 'Preventing health workers from providing care to the injured and transporting them to the proper facilities' was unethical, but this video clearly shows the Ministry of Health ambulances on location freely providing care to the injured protesters without any interference on both Thursday's and Saturday's sad events in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It also shows ambulances freely moving around the pearl roundabout during events on CCTV Footage; also over four ambulances on standby in the background during events while protesters antagonise authorities. They also stated in their press release 'Today, there was the use of unjustified force by the riot police against peaceful protesters' but the last reel shows the opposite. There was unjustified force used by the 'peaceful' protesters against healthcare workers from the Ministry of Interior and the confiscation (stealing) of their ambulances for the rioter's illegal usage. Both the Bahrain Medical Society and the Bahrain Dental Society produced press releases based on hearsay and did not investigate the any of their exaggerated allegations... More to come

Time For Change (English)
Duration : 67 Seconds

This 30-second PSA created by the Bahraini Society for Womans Development (Bahrain Women Union), targets a youth audience and aims to catalyze them to think about their future and create an attitudinal change towards self-responsibility. The PSA begins with an extreme close up of the hand of a clock dramatically ticking off seconds. The scene flashes between a young man watching the clock tick and rapid subsequent images of him turning and thinking in a hall of mirrors. The clock strikes twelve, and a chord strikes. The young man points directly to the viewer and says, Its time for change. The next image pictures his feet on a trampoline steadily rising higher and higher. His arms and hands fly overhead. A voice delivers a message in English, Reach higher and higher. Learn. Try. Give. We can help you fly. The final image of the boys rising body dissolves into a white background that displays the organizations web site and contact information. The PSA will be used in youth groups and retreats to motivate young people to overcome their inertia. The PSA was created in English because it is a language that many young people look towards to define social norms. Director: Nadia Ismail Mudhaffar / Email: na6611@yahoo.com ThisPSA is available upon request, in English to broadcasters and organizations who wish to distribute it rights-free. Background: From April 12 May 3, 2009, Alison Fast & Chandler Griffin of Barefoot Workshops led a three-week program in Manama, teaching ...

Remarks by US Assistant Secretary Posner on Bahrain
Duration : 350 Seconds

This is my third visit to Bahrain in the last year, and I welcome the opportunity to get another firsthand view of recent developments here. I am especially pleased to have the opportunity to congratulate the people of Bahrain as they celebrate the Kingdom's 40th National Day celebration tomorrow. This historic landmark is an occasion to celebrate the history and achievements of the Bahraini people from all walks of life. In the past week, I have had the opportunity to meet with a range of senior government officials, members of the political opposition, human rights activists, lawyers, trade unionists, and journalists. I also spoke with individuals who were charged in connection with the unrest in February and March, some of whose cases are still pending. I come here at a critical moment in Bahrain's history. Last month, King Hamad received the report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI). The report is an impressive document, as is the process that led to its publication. It is a great credit to King Hamad that he initiated the BICI process and that allowed the Commission freely free hand to conduct its activities. It is unusual for a government to invite a comprehensive external review of such sensitive matters. We strongly support the King's courage in initiating the review and his commitment to address the reforms outlined in the BICI report. We commend the Government of Bahrain for accepting the reports' essential related findings and ...
