Bahraini Political Activist Condemns US-Backed Regime For Killing, Torturing Protesters
Duration : 552 Seconds

www.democracynow.org - Bahrain has announced a commission to steer reforms after an inquiry found systematic rights abuse during a government crackdown on pro-democracy protests this year, but opposition parties say they will not participate in the commission. Published last week, the 500-page report outlines various abuses committed by King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa's government. According to the commission, nearly 3000 people were detained during the protests and at least 700 remain in prison. Thirty-five people are believed to have died in the unrest between February and March, and 11 more are suspected to have been killed later on. Meanwhile, 20 Bahrain doctors and nurses are being retried by a civilian court today after being convicted by a military court of trying to overthrow the government of Bahrain. Well, for more on the situation in Bahrain, Democracy Now! correspondent Anjali Kamat recently spoke to Bahraini activist Ala'a Shehabi during a trip to Cairo. She is the wife of a Bahraini political prisoner seized and jailed during the uprising. FOLLOW DEMOCRACY NOW! "Bahrain: Political Development in Modernizing Society" by Emile Nakhleh-Epilogue-12-19-2011
Duration : 1467 Seconds

www.presstv.com In this edition of the show we discuss the book: Bahrain: Political Development in a Modernizing Society, written by Emile Nakhleh. The book is a study of political development in Bahrain during the first five years after its independence in 1971. It is based on field research done by the author as the first senior Fulbright scholar in that country. The book was banned in Bahrain for 30 years but was allowed to be published in Arabic in that country in 2006. The study focuses on the tribal structure of Bahraini society and the rule of a minority Sunni government by al-Khalifa family over a largely disenfranchised Shia majority. To examine the making of the new state, the book analyzes the nature and characteristics of the Bahraini tribal society, the educational system of modern Bahrain, the nature of the political system, and popular demands for participation in decision making.

BAHRAIN'S REVOLUTION
Duration : 33 Seconds

What if a country's biggest athlete, a legend, a hero, a player who brought the nation some of its biggest sporting moments, was at practice one day and was suddenly taken into custody by masked men? What if he was held for months, tortured, his career ended, banned from his team and for playing for his country, all because he expressed his political views? It's not a storyline from a Hollywood script -- that is what allegedly happened in Bahrain. Specifically, it's what Alaa Hubail says happened to him. Hubail is the most famous soccer player in Bahrain and says similar treatment was forced on his brother, Mohammad, also a member of Bahrain's national soccer team; and to Anwar Al-Makki, Bahrain's internationally ranked table-tennis champion. In a story largely ignored by the Western world, these athletes describe in detail the horrific torture they endured at the hands of their government -- a government that is allied with the United States despite allegations of human rights abuses against pro-democracy protestors. E:60 goes to the Middle East for the first time to investigate how athletes were caught up in the clash of democracy, freedom, repression and politics. Jeremy Schaap reports.

Physicians Urge Obama Admin to Pressure Bahrain to End Repression of Doctors, Patients
Duration : 732 Seconds

The Gulf nation of Bahrain has announced that 47 medical workers who treated pro-democracy protesters during the nation's popular uprising will be tried before a military court on charges of acting against the state. Some could face the death penalty for providing medical assistance to protesters. Human rights groups say the arrests are part of a campaign of intimidation that runs directly counter to the Geneva Convention, which guarantees medical care to people wounded in conflict. We speak with Richard Sollom of Physicians for Human Rights. He recently traveled to Bahrain to document the situation there and is the co-author of a new report, "Do No Harm: A Call for Bahrain to End Systematic Attacks on Doctors and Patients.

Duration : 474 Seconds

A human rights group says Bahraini security forces intimidate and torture hospitalized opposition members. Physicians for Human Rights on Friday joined the chorus of organizations that have charged Bahraini security officials with targeting doctors and patients. The report details attacks on "physicians, medical staff, patients and unarmed civilians with the use of bird shot, physical beatings, rubber bullets, tear gas and unidentified chemical agents," the group says. This report echoes reports released earlier this month by Human Rights Watch and Doctors Without Borders.

Bahraini Journalist Speaks Up!
Duration : 331 Seconds

In light of the events that are happening in Bahrain, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs in GCC have gathered in Manama to show support for the Bahraini Government. The Bahrain's Minister of Foreign Affairs says in an earlier segment of the video said that the intervention on Pearl Roundabout was necessary because the country was on the "edge of sectarian war". He also mentions how the riot police used minimum force and that the protestors carried weapons and guns. During the questions segment, a Bahraini reporter on site mentions what happened in her own account, pleading that we need blood and to tend to the injured as the medics were prevented from taking the injured by the riot police as well as doctors, going as far as beating a doctor. She is barely able to contain her tears. He implies that this is an "insult to the army". Please watch and judge for yourselves.
