BAHRAIN: (GRAPHIC) History of Violence
Duration : 804 Seconds

The tiny island nation of Bahrain plays a big role in America's Middle East strategy. In fact, more than 6000 US military personnel and contractors are located just five miles from where government security forces violently put down demonstrations this week. Bahrain is also home to the US Fifth Fleet, a major logistics hub for the US Navy ships. The island is located halfway down the Persian Gulf, just off the coast of Saudi Arabia, and is something of a rest stop for US Navy ships cruising the waters of the Persian Gulf. With about 30 ships (including two aircraft carriers) the Fifth Fleet patrols the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, and the east coast of Africa. Bahrain provided facilities for American warships. It has been resupplying warships for nearly a half-century, ever since Great Britain's fleet left the island. Bahrain provided major basing facilities and support for the armada of US Navy ships sent for the first Persian Gulf War in 1990 and the Iraq War in 2003. American military sales to Bahrain have totaled nearly $1.5 billion in the past decade alone. The King of Bahrain was actually trained in the US: On June 21, 1972, HM Hamad bin Isa Al Kalifa joined the US Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was awarded the Freedom Medal of Kansas city from the Mayor and people of Kansas city. He attained the National Diploma in military administration on May 31, 1972, from the Industrial College for the Military Forces in ...

Bahrain hosts heritage festival
Duration : 101 Seconds

In a bid to keep traditions and cultures alive, Bahrain is hosting a festival of folklore and arts for the entire month of May. Museums and exhibition centers in the capital of Manama are the venues for a series of events and performances, casting the spotlight on traditional storytelling in the country. "The main thing of this festival is to teach children how to protect the intangible stories and folk tales and fairy tales that we have in our nation in Bahrain, and that's why we try to record it in some stories, some plays and songs. We also try to write a book about the old heritage folks in Bahrain," Mohammed al-Sulaiti, Director of Archaeology and Heritage at the Ministry of Culture and Education. Under the title "Folk Tales: Sea, Land and City," the festival exhibits photographs and films which allow locals as well as foreigners to gain insight into Bahrain's past, while festival activities commemorate the country's heritage. Despite the ongoing tension in the country, organizers hope to attract local and foreign visitors to the event to watch performances by traditional dancers and basket weavers work on their traditional crafts, as well as listen to old Bahraini fishing songs. Al-Sulaiti said the festival, which is also a part of a campaign in marking Manama as the Arab Capital of Culture 2012, aims to pass Bahraini culture onto future generations as well as give local artisans an opportunity to showcase their talents. Remarks by US Assistant Secretary Posner on Bahrain
Duration : 350 Seconds

This is my third visit to Bahrain in the last year, and I welcome the opportunity to get another firsthand view of recent developments here. I am especially pleased to have the opportunity to congratulate the people of Bahrain as they celebrate the Kingdom's 40th National Day celebration tomorrow. This historic landmark is an occasion to celebrate the history and achievements of the Bahraini people from all walks of life. In the past week, I have had the opportunity to meet with a range of senior government officials, members of the political opposition, human rights activists, lawyers, trade unionists, and journalists. I also spoke with individuals who were charged in connection with the unrest in February and March, some of whose cases are still pending. I come here at a critical moment in Bahrain's history. Last month, King Hamad received the report of the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI). The report is an impressive document, as is the process that led to its publication. It is a great credit to King Hamad that he initiated the BICI process and that allowed the Commission freely free hand to conduct its activities. It is unusual for a government to invite a comprehensive external review of such sensitive matters. We strongly support the King's courage in initiating the review and his commitment to address the reforms outlined in the BICI report. We commend the Government of Bahrain for accepting the reports' essential related findings and ...

Saudi invasion of Bahrain: The Alliance against Revolutions
Duration : 3390 Seconds

a seminar titled: Saudi invasion of Bahrain: The Alliance against Revolutions by Prof. Madawi Al-Rasheed* & Dr. Kristian Ulrichsen** On 14th March 2011 Saudi forces crossed the border with Bahrain and entered the country to crush the Revolution that had started one month earlier. The deafening silence by the West on the Saudi occupation of Bahrain has been shameful. The double standard policy of the West has shocked anyone with clear conscience. The West has abandoned its support for the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain and opted to support the Gulf monarchies that cannot be reformed or modernised in any shape or form. Date: Tuesday, 20th March 2012 Time: 6.30pm Venue: Abrar House, 45 Crawford Place, W1H 4LP * Madawi Al-Rasheed is Professor of Anthropology of Religion at King's College, London. Her research focuses on history, society, religion and politics in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, Middle Eastern Christian minorities, Arab migration, Islamist movements, and state and gender relations. Recent publications include Politics in an Arabian Oasis (IB Tauris 1991), A History of Saudi Arabia (second edition CUP 2010), Counter Narratives: History, Contemporary Society and Politics in Saudi Arabia and Yemen (Palgrave 2004),Transnational Connections and the Arab Gulf (Routledge 2005), Contesting the Saudi State: Islamic Voices from a New Generation (CUP 2007), Kingdom without Borders: Saudi Political, Religious and Media Frontiers (Hurst 2008) and Dying for Faith: Religiously ...

The Short But Informative History Of The Bahrain Revolution (PressTV)
Duration : 306 Seconds

The Bahrain Revolution is an important historical marker, existing simulataneous to the Libyan "revolution", which by now appears to have been staged by the US and Israeli secret agencies behind the scenes, while US leaders have argued publicly for "humanitarian intervention"; all the while, the Bahrain revolution was not only ignored by western media, but so too was US involvement in its quelling, Robert Gates himself having personally arranged Saudi Arabia's invasion into Bahrain for the express purpose of quelling protests with deadly force. The hypocrisy of the west and the Us and Israel, in particular, is on full display in Bahrain, the revolution that has gone MIA in the western media. original video: www.youtube.com

OLD BAHRAIN TODAY
Duration : 153 Seconds

A little history of Bahrain is a island country in the Persian Gulf. Although Bahrain became an independent country in 1971, the history of these islands starts from ancient times. Bahrain's strategic location in the Persian Gulf has brought rule and influence from the Sumerians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Portuguese, the Arabs, and the British. Bahrain has been proposed as the possible site of Dilmun, a land mentioned by Ancient Iraqi civilizations as a trade partner, source of raw material, copper, and entrepot of the Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley Civilization trade route. However, the exact location of Dilmun is unclear, it might be associated with the islands of Bahrain, Eastern Province, Qatar and nearby Iranian coast in the Persian Gulf. One of the early settlements discovered in Bahrain suggests that Sennacherib, king of Assyria (707-681 BC) attacked northeast Arabia and captured the Bahrain islands. From the 6th century BC to the 3rd century BC Bahrain was included in the Persian Empire by the Achaemenids, an Iranian dynasty.[2] Bahrain was referred to by the Greeks as "Tylos", the centre of pearl trading, when Nearchus discovered it while serving under Alexander the Great. From the 3rd century BC to the arrival of Islam in the 7th century AD, Bahrain was controlled by two other Iranian dynasties, the Parthians and the Sassanids. By about 130 BC, the Parthian dynasty brought the Persian Gulf under their control and extended their influence as far as Oman ...

Yousif / Manama Bahrain . Identity Series by Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada
Duration : 170 Seconds

"I went to the city of Manama in Bahrain to make a mural as part of the Alwan 338 festival put together by the Al Riwaq Art Space. Knowing the current situation there, I was a little apprehensive but a good friend working with the gallery explained the special nature of what the Al Riwaq Art Space was doing. I met some truly extraordinary people who believe in the role of contemporary art in their country's future. Against all odds they strive to change the barren artistic landscape that exists in Bahrain today. There are so many layers to Bahrain. There is a huge class division, exotic cars, colossal images of the king everywhere, boundless hospitality, arrests, the smell of tear gas every weekend, road blocks, women who can drive and are free to dress as they wish, a graffiti war between dissidents and the police, an American naval base since 1947, Fuddruckers, Sizzlers, a clamp down on dissident areas, the legal sale of alcoholic beverages, a rich cultural history... It is easy to resort to the didactic or aesthetically pleasing image, but it is much more difficult to create poetic and emotionaly charged art that can reach you at different levels. I decided to create a mural of Yousif, a traditional Bahraini fisherman, one of a few hundred that are left." Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada Video short created by Untalmiguel.com y Ana Alvarez-Errecalde

At the same time, the group removed Libya and Venezuela from a list of countries considered under surveillance. Reporters Without Borders released the lists in its latest "Enemies of the Internet" report. The group notes the importance of the Internet and social networks in the Middle East during what has been called the Arab Spring. Among them are Burma, China, Cuba, Iran and North Korea. The list also includes Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. Bahrain and Belarus are the newest additions to the list. Reporters Without Borders says Bahrain used repressive measures to block news and information after unrest began in the Arab world last year. It says the government has used a combination of methods to suppress the opposition. These include keeping international media away from the country, arresting bloggers and harassing human rights activists. Delphine Halgand heads the Reporters Without Borders office in Washington.
