Bahrain hosts heritage festival
Duration : 101 Seconds

In a bid to keep traditions and cultures alive, Bahrain is hosting a festival of folklore and arts for the entire month of May. Museums and exhibition centers in the capital of Manama are the venues for a series of events and performances, casting the spotlight on traditional storytelling in the country. "The main thing of this festival is to teach children how to protect the intangible stories and folk tales and fairy tales that we have in our nation in Bahrain, and that's why we try to record it in some stories, some plays and songs. We also try to write a book about the old heritage folks in Bahrain," Mohammed al-Sulaiti, Director of Archaeology and Heritage at the Ministry of Culture and Education. Under the title "Folk Tales: Sea, Land and City," the festival exhibits photographs and films which allow locals as well as foreigners to gain insight into Bahrain's past, while festival activities commemorate the country's heritage. Despite the ongoing tension in the country, organizers hope to attract local and foreign visitors to the event to watch performances by traditional dancers and basket weavers work on their traditional crafts, as well as listen to old Bahraini fishing songs. Al-Sulaiti said the festival, which is also a part of a campaign in marking Manama as the Arab Capital of Culture 2012, aims to pass Bahraini culture onto future generations as well as give local artisans an opportunity to showcase their talents. Bahrain 2009 Video 8
Duration : 251 Seconds

I took this video while walking around Bahrain Fort. (Qal'at al-Bahrain) It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The archaeological site of Bahrain Fort is one of the largest in Bahrain. It is located on the north coast of the island. The area of this mound is about 400x700 meters and about 8 meters in height. An Islamic fort dating back to the 16th century AD dominates the site and may be the location of the old capital of Dilmon. It contains remains of cities which were inhabited during many periods, 4000- 5000 years ago. The study of these remains form the foundation of Bahrain's history that has played such a prominent role in Arabian Gulf archaeology. Excavations by the Danish archaeological expedition have unveiled the remains of buildings of six cities located around the fort. First City: Built near the sea, the houses of the first city were small and apparently without walls. No signs of this city can be traced now because the new huge buildings of the second city have covered it. It seems that it was built at the beginning of the third millennium BC, about 2800 BC Second City: A city surrounded with huge wall that can be seen in the excavations at three sites around the mound is located on the northwest side of the fort. It is 100 yards from the coast and 100 feet from the northern perimeter, where the stones, which were extracted during a late period, have disappeared. Many parts of the internal front of the wall are still intact. The opening ...

Bahrain (Arabic: ‏البحرين‎, al-Baḥrayn) (Persian: ‏بحرين‎, Baḥrain), officially the Kingdom of Bahrain (Arabic: مملكة البحرين‎, Mamlakat al-Baḥrayn), is a small island state near the western shores of the Persian Gulf. It is ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family. The population in 2010 stood at 1234571, including 666172 non-nationals.[1] Formerly an emirate, Bahrain was declared a kingdom in 2002. Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands, the largest being Bahrain Island, at 55 km (34 mi) long by 18 km (11 mi) wide. Saudi Arabia lies to the west and is connected to Bahrain by the King Fahd Causeway. Qatar is to the southeast across the Gulf of Bahrain. The planned Qatar Bahrain Causeway will link Bahrain and Qatar and become the world's longest marine causeway.[4] Known for its oil and pearls, Bahrain is also home to many large structures, including the Bahrain World Trade Center and the Bahrain Financial Harbour, with a proposal in place to build the 1022 m (3353 ft) high Murjan Tower. The Qal'at al-Bahrain (the harbour and capital of the ancient land of Dilmun) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.[5] The Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix takes place at the Bahrain International Circuit.[6]

Bahrain Fort, Karrana (Bahrain) - Travel Guide
Duration : 71 Seconds

Take a tour of Bahrain Fort in Karrana, Bahrain - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. One of the longest continuous stories in human history can perhaps be traced through the Bahrain fort in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This archaeological site features a tell, a mound created by continuous, overlapping civilizations. Continuous occupation of this area is thought to have begun around 2300 BC and continued into the 16th century. The different inhabitants of the area include the Portuguese, Persians, and ancient Dilmun civilization. The Portuguese built the fort that gives the area its current name. Today, approximately 25 percent of the site has been excavated, and due to those findings, it was honored with a UNESCO World Heritage designation.
