Christian was born in The Bahamas and is of Bahamian and Trinidadian heritage. A Rhodes Scholar, Cave Canem Fellow, and the recipient of a Lannan Residency Fellowship, Christian is currently a Professor of English at the University of Toronto. The Caribbean poet won the best first collection prize at the Aldeburgh poetry festival for his book Running the Dusk, described by judge Neil Rollinson as "the clear stand-out" among all the volumes read for the award.
