Here is a video I shot while on the Disney Cruise. We were in Nassau Bahamas and went on a Stuart Cove's Shark feeding adventure. We did not feed the sharks of course but watched at extremely close range (Watch in one shot where my son gets hit in the head by a sharks lower caudal fin.) This was one of the best dives we have ever done. This was shot entirely on a $300 GoPro Hero HD video camera. AWESOME! These Awesome predators certainly deserve our respect and I would only do a dive like this with reputable operations like Stuart Cove's. Here are some things you may not know about sharks From National Geographic The United States averages just 16 shark attacks each year and slightly less than one shark-attack fatality every two years. Meanwhile, in the coastal US states alone, lightning strikes and kills more than 41 people each year. Research indicates that about 100 million sharks are killed each year by humans -- roughly 11000 sharks every hour, around the clock [source: HSUS]. These numbers may even be on the low side, since the estimate is based only on the reported catch numbers. It's likely that many sharks are caught without being reported. As apex predators, sharks play a vital role in maintaining the health of marine ecosystems, serving as an indicator of ocean health. The focus of this standing room only debate could arguably be described as the most heated topic surrounding the preservation of our marine heritage since long line fishing. The Bahamas Pelagic Aquaculture Tuna Fishing Program as proposed by David and Paul Mellor has sparked vigorous debate over the last couple of weeks. The Mellors claim of sustainability and conservation in the harvest and farming of tuna in growing cages in the ocean is an emotionally charged topic throughout the international maritime community and was vigorously debated. This town meeting moderated by Dr. Pamela Etuk was much anticipated as both panelists and audience alike openly discussed the merits of purse seine netting and its ecological and economic affects on our tourism based archipelago nation. The audience included representatives from The Billfish Foundation, other Bahamian Aquaculture programs, marine biologists, sport fisherman, tour operators, taxi drivers, divers and a multitude of concerned citizens from various walks of life. Rob Torcellini bought a $700 greenhouse kit to grow more vegetables in his backyard. Then he added fish to get rid of a mosquito problem and before long he was a committed aquaponic gardener. Now his 10 by 12 foot greenhouse is filled with not only vegetables, but fish. And the best part is: the poo from that fish is what fertilizes his garden. Aquaponics combines fish farming (aquaculture) with the practice of raising plants in water (hydroponics). It's organic by definition: instead of using chemical fertilizers, plants are fertilized by the fish poo (and pesticides/herbicides can't be introduced to kill pests because they could harm the fish). Since the plants don't need dirt, aquaponics allows gardeners to produce more food in less space. And in addition to the vegetables they can grow, most aquaponics gardeners cultivate edible fish as well. In this video, Rob shows us the aquaponics greenhouse in his Connecticut backyard, that he built mostly from scavenged parts, as well as his DIY indoor system where he's growing lettuce under a grow light. Between Hatchet Bay and Gregory Town is the Valley of the Silos. Remnats of the days when Eleuthera was considered the breadbasket of the Bahamas - they were used to store feed for livestock - chicken and cattle.
