Although the Bahamas International Film Festival wrapped in December 2007, many of the films, and their filmmakers go on to attend film festival after film festival throughout the world in order to continue the promotion of their film. Then he meets the dynamic Catherine, a misunderstood "Half-rican Canadian", who's as righteously quirky as he is. Junkanoo is a street parade with music, which occurs in many towns across The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands every Boxing Day (December 26), New Year's Day and, more recently, in the summer on the island of Grand Bahama. The word "Junkanoo" derived from an African slave master and trader named "John Canoe" in the 17th century. These slaves were not allowed much freedom and would hide in the bushes when they had the chance. While in the bushes, they would dance and make music while covered in costumes that they made from various paints that they made and leaves that they found. The first African-American to win an Oscar in screenplay writing, Geoffrey Fletcher attended the Bahamas premiere of Precious. The Bahamas Weekly is pleased to bring you our streaming video interview with Fletcher, who attended the Bahamas International Film Festival in December on behalf of Lee Daniels, the director. Daniels had attended previous Bahamas film festivals, and having Precious as BIFF's closing night film is a definitely feather in the festival's founder and executive director's hat, as not only did the film win for best screenplay adaptation, but it also won for Best Supporting Actress by Mo'Nique, and she becomes only the fifth black actress to win an Oscar following Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Halle Berry and Jennifer Hudson. The video ends with BIFF Founder and Executive Director, Leslie Vanderpool explaining how her friendship with the of "Precious" director Lee Daniels led to her to securing Precious as BIFF's closing night film. In temperatures close to zero, a designated 'Spirit Man' is stripped and beaten by the crowd.
