AZERBAIJANI CIVIL SOCIETY WILL JOIN WARSAW SUMMIT "Democratic reforms can not be held without the involvement of civil society. The Euroepan Union is ready to support these reforms," said thePolish Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Michal Labenda, in a conference in Baku today. Today's conference was aiming to draft proposals for the"Eastern Partnership" Civil Society Forum that will be held within the frame of 2nd summit of the "Eastern Partnership" Program, in Warsaw on 28-29 September. Head of the EU mission to Azerbaijan, Roland Kobia, said that the development of cooperation with both the government and civil society is significant for the EU. He called upon NGO representatives to make proposals and present them to the Warsaw summit. The head of the league of protection of labor rights Sahib Mammadov, speaking on "Human Rights and Democracy" said that civil society proposes to strengthen the guarantees of freedom of association, supporting the simplification of NGO registration and the introduction of a notification system instead of permits. He also emphasized that restrictions to freedom of assembly, freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, and freedom of religion must be eliminated. Forum of Intellectuals held a debate on Friday in the IRFS on the activities of the country's civil society institutions. Screenwriter Rustam Ibrahimbeyov, former MP Gultakin Hajibeyli, and scholar Jamil Hasanli spoke on the influence of intellectuals and their role in civil society. One of the leaders of the Forum Eldar Namazov suggested that the source of many problems of the Azerbaijani society is the weakness of civilian institutions.
