The spring that never blossomed: Freedoms suppressed in Azerbaijan, details a wave of intimidation and arrests around protests against corruption and the increasing suppression of independent media, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and opposition parties. Since then, youth activists and opposition figures have been jailed on arbitrary or trumped up charges while journalists and human rights defenders have been threatened and harassed.

Adnan is not only a blogger, he is also the founder of the OL! Youth Movement. OL literally means to be, and the movement encourages young people to take positive actions and to be liberal, tolerant and democratic. Milli established Alumni Network TV, an online television station. In July 2009, shortly after the video about the donkey appeared, the two young men were at a restaurant when they were suddenly attacked and beaten by three men. They submitted a complaint at the local police station, but instead of receiving assistance, they were arrested. Milli was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment and Adnan to 24 months. Milli and Adnan are exponents of a new era in which the struggle for human rights is waged via the internet. The authorities are trying to prevent the internet from becoming a powerful opposition tool in the run up to the next parliamentary elections. Blogs and social networking web sites have become very popular with young Azerbaijanis. Adnans father, political scientist Hikmat Hajizade, and OL! have launched an international campaign to obtain the webloggers release, using the latest means of communication. The campaigns central figure is the donkey which made Milli and Adnan famous. The slogan is: One World, One Dream, Free Donkey.

The Center for National and International Studies held a discussion on "National identity problem in Turkey and Azerbaijan in the 21st century" today. The event was organized as part of a project on "People's Republic of Azerbaijan - 93". In particular, the experts analyzed the domestic and foreign policies of Turkey and Azerbaijan during the period after the Cold War. Their basic conclusion was that Azerbaijan departed from the model of a democratic republic in 1918, and in Turkey, the traditional balance between state institutions has been broken. "According to Western experts, Turkey is reviving neo-Ottoman ideology, based not only on Turkism, but also on Islam and shared cultural values. However, Turkey is building its foreign and domestic politics on guarantees of security, the demonstration of Turkic identity and a greater emphasis on Islam," said Ankara University professor Tashansu Turker. Speaking on Azerbaijan's political elite and the national dilemma, experts noted that the traditions of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in the field of national identity were based on three priorities: Europeanization, Turkification and Islam. However, the modern concept of national identity cannot be based only on language, culture and religion alone. Journalists and civil society figures from Azerbaijan gathered at the grave of slain Azerbajani journalist Elmar Huseynov on 8 September 2007 to mark International Journalists' Solidarity Day. Elmar Huseynov was shot to death on 2 March 2005 in the doorway to his apartment. His murder remains unsolved to this day. Sep 1997 The tiny former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan is set to become the next Kuwait. Its neighbouring Caspian Sea territory has oil reserves of more than twice the North Sea total. Already $22 billion worth of contracts have been signed with Western oil companies and oil executives are flooding into the capital Baku. Azerbaijan was one of the poorer Soviet republics because the oil was inefficiently exploited and the money stayed in Moscow. Now independent and devasted by war with neighbouring Armenia, Azerbaijan is carefully playing off Russian and Western oil interests. But fears remain that ordinary people will never see the vast wealth. Azerbaijan's war refugees are already a huge social catastrophe. Forced to flee her home in the war, Badam lives in a railway carriage with her family of seven. Azerbaijan lost 20% of its area in the war with Armenia and the government refuses permanent housing to its one million homeless, determined that one day they must return home. Azerbaijan's potential riches make it a highly strategic pawn in the greedy politics of the Caspian region. It remains to be seen if it can exploit this wealth to benefit its own people.
