Considered to be one of Azerbaijan's most significant poets, Niẓām ad-Dīn Abū Muḥammad Ilyās ibn-Yūsuf ibn-Zakkī combined philosophy and poetry with history and legend to create a literary legacy that still resonates. Born around 1141 AD in Ganja, Azerbaijan, Nizami received an exemplary education, which is reflected in his poetry. Known as a poet, scholar, and philosopher, Nizami is recognized for using poetry to examine the development of mankind in society. Nizami is best known for his Khamsa, or "Quintet", which includes Treasury of Secrets, Khosrow and Shirin, Leyli and Majnun, Seven Beauties, and Iskander-Nameh. Each of the five epics was written with a unique meter. Nizami's influence on literature lasted long after his death. He was a major proponent in the use of vernacular language in poetry, introduced new style concepts, and founded a new literary form. His literary influence spanned Iran, Turkey, Central Asia, and India, where poets imitated the Khamsa in form and theme. As a notable figure in the Eastern Renaissance of the twelfth century, Nizami's poetry is still honored and studied today in Azerbaijan and throughout the East. Haft Paykar "Seven Beauties" Based on Nizami Ganjavi's Epic Poem preformed by the Silk Road Dance Company At the Atlas Performing Arts Center on Feb. 2011 in Washington, DC Sponsored by The Karabakh Foundation Video Produced by Hasan Sarbakhshian

The art of Azerbaijani Ashiq
Duration : 640 Seconds

UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2009 URL: www.unesco.org Description: The art of Azerbaijani Ashiqs combines poetry, storytelling, dance and vocal and instrumental music into a traditional performance art that stands as a symbol of Azerbaijani culture. Characterized by the accompaniment of the ''saz,'' a stringed musical instrument, the classical repertoire includes 200 songs, 150 literary-musical compositions known as ''dastans,'' nearly 2000 poems in different traditional poetic forms and numerous stories. The regional variations may include other musical instruments, but all are united by a common national language and artistic history. Ashiqs take part in weddings, friendly parties and festive events throughout the Caucasus and appear on concert stages, radio and television, sometimes synthesizing classical melodies with contemporary ones as they continue to recreate their repertoire. Their art is considered an emblem of national identity and the guardian of Azerbaijani language, literature and music. Even as Ashiqs represent the consciousness of a people, they also help to promote cultural exchange and dialogue: Kurds, Lezhins, Talishes, Tats and other ethnic groups living in the country often perform the Ashiqs art, and their poems and songs have spread across the region. AĞAC WILL PRESENT DISSIDENT WORLD LITERATURE
Duration : 104 Seconds

A new literary magazine Ağac (Tree) will focus on bringing dissident writers from around the world to a young Azerbaijani audience. The presentation of Ağac was co-organized by the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Youth Committee and the Center for Free Writers. Writer Seymour Baijan said that the situation in Azerbaijan is grave, "There is a funding problem, there is a publishing problem, and there is a problem of the reading audience. It is the authorities that are guilty for this." Writer Rasim Garaja says that there is a need for a magazine that brings together samples of translated world literature. "We believe that the readers of the quarterly magazine will be the youth," he said. The editor of the magazine, Namig Huseynov, said that one of the magazine's key aims is to keep the ruling establishment from controlling literature. "In the magazine, we give preference to the works of dissident writers. The aim is to change the stalemate situation of the literature." According to Turkish representative Rasim As, who was attending the event, the fact that the magazine is rich with the works of a dissident nature is encouraging. He also expressed his happiness with the fact that a work of a Turkish writer was included in the magazine. "I would have been upset if I did not see a Turkish writer in the magazine. It is so good that you have allotted room for Nazim Hikmat as well."

South Azerbaijan Fighting Persian Racism
Duration : 323 Seconds

The current so-called Islamic regime of Iran differs from the previous regime, the Pahlavi regime, but they have one thing in common which is their anti Turkish policies. Turks live in South Azerbaijan occupied by Iran and it is located in north-western Iran. There are 35 million Turks in South Azerbaijan under Iranian occupation and Iran has denied them their most basic rights (such as banning Turkish in schools)and they suffer from Persian racism in so many ways. The current racist Persian regime is hiding behind the veil of religion. Iranian/Persian journalists do not report on the Turks in Iran and their upraise against the Persian chauvinism. Iranian/Persian journalists and activists try to hide or deny the Turks' anti-Iranian/Persian movement. They try to hide or deny the desire among the Turks in Iran for independency from Iranian occupation. Through thus dishonesty, Iranian/Persian journalists and activists are misleading news readers and perhaps decision makers . Iranian/Persian history and literature is built on hatred against the Turks and Arabs, Epic of the King is only one example. In last 200 years, racist Iran has spent tremendous amount of resources to eliminate South Azerbaijani Turks' identity and attempts imposing Persian and fabricated identities on them. Iranian/Persian journalists do not report on the Turks' suffering from Persian racism and their struggle. Persian journalists and activists attempt to deny and hide this very important from the world ...
