Amorphophallus Paeoniifolius (such a funny name), called Suranah in sanskrit which means one who is golden. Its colour is light yellow, hence the name. The corms are a popular vegetable in traditional homes in India. It may be popular in other parts of Asia too. It is very highly prized by Ayurveda pundits for its healing properties. The corms have to be cooked in a traditional way. Otherwise, it may irritate the throat. So never try without the appropriate guidance as per rules of your country. It is reputed to be acrid, astringent, expectorant, cooling,etc etc. It is good for Vata and Kapha troubles. It is traditionally used in villages to help manage asthma, cough, vomiting, anorexia, constipation, flatulence, colic, worms, seminal weakness, fatigue, anemia and general weakness.All in all it is a Top vegetable. How to grow? very easy. Just cut out the little buds peeping out of the big tuber, just like potato, make a small hole in a suitable place and bury it about 3 or 5 inches deep. It should be well fed with mulch, and fine vermi-compost for bigger corms. This plant seeds profusely too. The seeds also scattered by birds. You could sprout the seeds too if you are clever. This plant tolerates shade nicely, but not too much. A few hours of sun will be appreciated by it. It does well in hot and humid weather also. After doing some reading, we learnt that from the 6th century BC it was part of the Persian Empire. Around AD325 it adopted Christianity, and Islam became the major religion from the 7th century. A classic era of Azeri culture bloomed in the 12th century, however in the 13th century the cities were destroyed by the Mongols, Timur (Tamerlane) and assorted earthquakes. The Russians started annexing Muslim khanates in the early 18th century. Shirali Baba Muslimov (also Mislimov)(allegedly 26 March 1805 - Barzavu -- September 2, 1973) was a Talysh shepherd from the village of Barzavu in the Lerik region of Azerbaijan, a mountainous area near the Iranian border. He was claiming to be the oldest person who ever lived when he died on September 2 (or 4), 1973 at the alleged age of 168. Muslimov's story was taken up in 1973 by National Geographic Magazine, which told that on the occasion he still rode horseback and tended an orchard planted in the 1870's. National Geographic later recanted on the claim. The same story was told by the Guinness Book, stated as unconfirmed along other similar claims. Shirali credited his longevity to an active life and hard work. When he died, his obituary read that "he had tended the sheep of the rich people for the first hundred years of his life." Afterwards, he was involved in collective farming on the "kolhoz." The family lived in poverty, eating only what they could produce, which meant, primarily, a diet of yogurt, fruits and vegetables. There were no food markets. But there was an abundant supply of fresh spring water. He had three wives, with the last one he married at age of 136 and had a daughter. A newspaper article in the mid-1960s commented that he had descendants down to the 5th generation and was having difficulty remembering the names of his 200 grand- and great-grand-children.

Hendrix College awarded Odyssey Medals to seven alumni whose life achievements exemplify Your Hendrix Odyssey during a special ceremony as part of the colleges annual Founders Day Oct. 22. The recipients were honored during a convocation in Staples Auditorium on the Hendrix campus. Eric Kenefick 84 told the audience of his passion to rid the world of chronic hunger, discussing that more than 1 billion people in the world are presently malnourished. Kenefick lives in Johannesburg, South Africa, and works for the World Food Programmes Regional Bureau for eastern, central and southern Africa, which supports WFP operations in 19 countries in the region as well as working with other United Nations agencies and governments at national and regional levels. Upon graduation from Hendrix, he was a high school biology and chemistry teacher in Fiji as a Peace Corps volunteer before returning to Arkansas in March 1993 when he worked as a Youth and Programme Director at Trinity United Methodist Church. During that time, he worked with a group to establish the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers (RPCV) group for Central Arkansas.
