This mixed-use project extends over 221 hectares in the district formerly known as Black City in the city of Baku, an industrial area harking back to the oil business that began in Baku in the late 19th century. Under the terms of the decree issued by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr Ilham Aliyev, to improve the country's ecological credentials, it was decided to rehabilitate the site by replacing yesteryear's industry with a new, modern centre called Baku White City. This ambitious project will include commercial and residential real estate, government departments, parks, and car parks. There will also be new transport networks, including underground train lines and tram lines along the seafront to reduce car use. Atkins was asked to leadmanage this large-scale project, and Foster & Partners, F + A, and Azerbaijan professionals were called in for the architectural work. The major design priorities behind Baku White City are architectural diversity, ecological compatibility, and adapting new developments to the existing urban fabric. With this project, Baku will play a front-line role in global design and urban development.

The Baku Olympic Stadium is a retractable roof football stadium (attendance: 65000) currently under construction in Boyuk Shor, Baku, Azerbaijan, and planned to be opened in 2015. The main tenant of the stadium will be Azerbaijan's national team, who will move from their current home at the Tofik Bakhramov Stadium when it is completed.

Historical monuments The ancient city of Baku has numerous historical and architectural monuments dating to various historical epochs. The Old City of Icheri Sheher occupies 22 hectares in the center of Baku. It hosts over 50 historical and architectural monuments from various eras. The Palace of Shirvanshakhs, the Maiden Tower and Synyg Gala (The Broken Tower) are among the monuments which survived till present day. The Palace of Shirvanshakhs is one of the pearls of Azerbaijani architecture. It was built in the beginning of the 15th century. It includes a historical complex, the palace, a divankhana, the Shirvanshah's room, a palace mosque with minarets, bath house, a room of Seyid Yahya Bakuvi, and the Western divankhana monuments, which were built during a later stage. The complex construction began in 1441, while the Western divankhana was completed by architect Amirshah in 1558. Azerbaijan's unique architectural monument - the Maiden Tower - is located in the south-western part of the Icheri Sheher. The tower was built in two stages. Its bottom part with a height of 13.7 meters is dated by most experts to the 7th -6th centuries BCE. The Maiden Tower has a total height of 29.7 meters, with a diameter of 16.5 meters. The wall thickness in the bottom part is 5 meters, reducing to 4 meters at the top. The tower consists of 8 tiers and has a 21 meter deep water well. Palace of the Shirvanshahs (or Shirvanshahs' Palace; Azerbaijani: Şirvanşahlar sarayı) is the biggest monument of the Shirvan-Absheron branch of the Azerbaijan architecture, situated in the Inner City of Baku. The complex contains the main building of the palace, Divanhane, the burial-vaults, the shah's mosque with a minaret, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi's mausoleum, a portal in the east - Murad's gate, a reservoir and the remnants of the bath-house. Built on a site inhabited since the Palaeolithic period, the Walled City of Baku reveals evidence of Zoroastrian, Sasanian, Arabic, Persian, Shirvani, Ottoman, and Russian presence in cultural continuity. The Inner City (Icheri Sheher) has preserved much of its 12th-century defensive walls. The 12th-century Maiden Tower (Giz Galasy) is built over earlier structures dating from the 7th to 6th centuries BC, and the 15th-century Shirvanshahs' Palace is one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's architecture. Walled City of Baku with the Shirvanshah's Palace and Maiden Tower are included to UNESCO World Heritage List.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Committee selected the Ardabil's' Shiekh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble as World Heritage Sites at its 34th (July 25-August 4) meeting in Brazil. The Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble in Ardabil is a Sufi spiritual retreat dating from between the early 16th century and late 18th century. It is the burial site of Safi al-Din Ardabili (b. 1252/3), the eponymous founder of the Safawiyya order of Sufism. The complex is a fine example of medieval Azerbaijani architecture. The shrine was an important site of pilgrimage throughout the Safavid period (1501-1722) and underwent numerous improvements and embellishments to become one of the most beautiful of all Safavid monuments. The site includes a library, a mosque, a school, a mausoleum, a cistern, a hospital, kitchens, a bakery and some offices. Architecture of Azerbaijan refers to the architecture development in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani architecture typically combines elements of East and West. Many ancient architectural treasures such as the Maiden Tower and Palace of the Shirvanshahs in the walled city of Baku survive in modern Azerbaijan. Among other medieval architectural treasures reflecting the influence of several schools are the Shirvan shahs' palace in Baku, the palace of the Shaki Khans in the town of Shaki in north-central Azerbaijan, the Surakhany Temple on the Apsheron Peninsula, a number of bridges spanning the Aras River, and several mausoleums. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, little monumental architecture was created, but distinctive residences were built in Baku and elsewhere.
