www.KarabakhFoundation.org On April 27, 2012, the Karabakh Foundation hosted in its Washington DC office four religious leaders from Azerbaijan, including Sheikh-ul Islam of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus, Prof. Dr. Allahshukur Pashazade, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church of Azerbaijan father Vladimir Fekete SDB, the episcope of Baku and Azerbaijan father Alexander, and the chairman of the religious community of the Mountain Jews of Azerbaijan, Milikh Yevdayev. The religious leaders held a prayer during their 2-hour long visit.

Azeri-Rights Protesters Demand Khatami Apology May 24, 2009 (RFE/RL) -- Hundreds of ethnic Azeri students in several Iranian cities have gathered at rallies to express anger over perceived discrimination that was highlighted in a YouTube video that appears to show former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami making an ethnic joke at their expense, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports. Khatami, who bowed out after flirting with a fresh bid for the presidency, is campaigning for fellow reformist candidate Mir Hossein Musavi. Separate protests at Tehran University in the capital and at Sama University in Umiye demanded an apology from Khatami and the passage of antidiscrimination legislation in the parliament. One participant in the Tehran demonstration told RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service that more than 100 demonstrators were on hand to condemn "chauvinism" and "apartheid" in Iran. "Khatami should apologize via official media -- print and television," the student added. Demonstrators insisted that Khatami should be banned from wearing religious garb, since they say he misused religion by making fun of the way Azeris tell religious stories in a remark recorded at a private gathering. They also urged all candidates in Iran's June 12 presidential election to express their views on issues of minorities and discrimination. A terrible accident occurred in the Alibayli village of Azerbaijan's Tovuz district, bordering Armenia. An explosive killed a 13-year-old girl, Aygun Shahmaliyeva, and heavily wounded her 32-year-old mother Elnara Shahmaliyeva in the hip. A toy dog was loaded with an explosive device and dropped by what was believed to be the Armenian side into the Tovuz River flowing through the Alibeyli village. The similar accident occurred here in 1994 when two kids were killed and one wounded as a result of an explosion of a toy dropped by Armenian side into the river.

World Human Rights Report 2012: Azerbaijan's human rights record deteriorated in 2011. The government cracked down on all forms of protest and imprisoned dozens of youth activists after sham trials. Although the number of government-initiated criminal and civil libel cases against journalists decreased, the atmosphere for journalists and other critics remained hostile. The government's so-called beautification campaign in central Baku, the capital, resulted in forced evictions and illegal demolitions. Restrictions on freedom of religion and torture and ill-treatment in custody also persisted. Azerbaijan continued to deny access to the country for the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
