| Great History of Azerbaijan Duration : 335 Seconds The Caucasian Albanians (also spelled as Alban, Aghvan, Aghban, and Alpan) were a nation, which, according to the ancient geographer Strabo, consisted of 26 tribes, ethnic groups, such as Albans themselves, as well as Gargars, Udis, etc. Some of them were of Turkic descent, while majority were indigenous authohontous Caucasian tribes, speaking in Caucasian languages. The Artsakh area was also inhabited by Saks from which the name "Artsakh" means "Land of manly Sak's." They lived in the region already in IV century BC In many scholarly sources both ancient people were referred to as Ishguz's. The Massagetai, who lived all around Caspian Sea, had previously formed their kingdom in South Azerbaijan (Iranian Azerbaijan), around lake Urmiyeh, and ancient Greek historian Herodotus makes a reference to their ruler, Queen Tomris, who personally led her troops against Cyrus II the Great of Persia and killed him in 529 BC. It should be noted that Tomris is a Turkic name, in fact, the name of the she-wolf who according to the myth saved ancient Turks from annihilation. In addition, Herodotus in his "History" when describing the right side of Araxes river (Media/Iran) mentiones Abars (who eventually became Avars) and Bashigirhihi (today's Bashkirs). This proves that there were Turkic people in South Azerbaijan as well, albeit probably Iranian-speaking. Various Turkic tribes have been inhabiting the area in and around the Caucasus. In fact as early as III century BC large influx of ... Tags :azerbaijan, sari, gelin, history, great, documentary, culture, live, museum
| | History of Azerbaijan 2: ADHARBAYJAN, ISLAMIZATION & TURKIFICIATION Duration : 216 Seconds Iran is home to ancient civilizations. Although today they are Turkified, Azerbaijanis can trace their history back to several centuries before Christ with the foundation of Atropatene from the ashes of Media. This series presents the main points of the history of Azerbaijan, without bias from Armenian or Caucasian Azerbaijani sources. 2: ADHARBAYJAN, ISLAMIZATION & TURKIFICIATION The Median province of Atropatene was an inseparable piece of Greater Iran. This all changed when Arabs conquered the Iranian civilization. This invasion would change the history of Iranian peoples forever, as it introduced Islam to its people, replacing the former Zoroastrian religion. Following an era of heavy Arabic influence, a larger threat emerged in the East. Mongoloid nomads who terrorized the entire Asian continent, excluding India and the Middle East, began to expand to the west. Of these mongoloid people, the Seljuqs, a Turcoman dynasty, claimed the entire Greater Iran, and extended its borders to the gates of Europe. The arrival of Turcomans in the Middle East changed the history of dozens of nations. Among the affected were the Atropats. Through Arabic and Turkic pronunciation, Autrpatakan, the native name of Atropatene, changed to Āḏarbāy[e]jān, or more easily, Adharbayjan. Turcomans migrated to the Middle East in large numbers, most notably in Armenia, Albania, Anatolia and Atropatene. The nomadic invaders assimilated many nations in the process, which caused the extinction of ... | | History of Azerbaijan and Armenia [16:9] Duration : 212 Seconds After the Russian-Persian conquest over Azerbaijani Khanates the Treaty of Gulistan was established in 1813 in which Derbend, Shaki, Borchali, Guba, Shivan, Ganja, Karabakh and Baku Khanates became vassals of the Russian Empire. After a failed attempt by the Persian Empire to reconquer the lost Azerbaijani Khanates, the Treaty of Turkmenchay was signed by the Russian- and Persian Empire in 1828. The treaty agreed on the vassalisation of Erivan, Nakhchivan and Talysh Khanates into the Russian Empire; the Persian Empire renounced claims to Northern Azerbaijani Khanates. The Azerbaijani nation was now divided in two parts (north & south). While North Azerbaijani Khanates became part of the Russian Empire, Southern Azerbaijan Khanates became part of the Persian Empire. Immediately after the Russian victory, Armenian families from the Persian Empire (most notably Maragha) who were promised ambitious privileges were settled in Karabakh. As part of the Russian Imperial policy to destroy the nationhood and unity of the Azerbaijani people and make it a integrity of the Russian Empire, Azerbaijani people were renamed to Tatars, Muslims or Turkmen. This caused much confusion amongst Azerbaijanis and still continues to cause misguidance amongst scholars while studying the history of Caucasus. Although the Christification of Muslim ethnic groups within the Russian Empire went fluently according to plan, most Muslims who refused to convert where from the Caucasus, most notably the ...
