| Austria Travel: The Salzkammergut - Driving past Grimming Duration : 156 Seconds Mylast day in Austria (May 8, 2008) had arrived - or so I thought. Early in the morning I said a sad goodbye to my brother and sister-in-law and started my drive towards the City of Salzburg, from where I was going to fly to London. I drove on the highway through the high mountains of Upper Styria and exited at Liezen to link up with one of Austria's most picturesque areas: the Salzkammergut, also known as the location for many of the scenes from the world famous movie "Sound of Music". I drove past the imposing limestone mountain of Grimming through the village of Bad Aussee to one of Austria's most well-known mountain villages: Hallstatt, settled since pre-historic times, is located on the shores of the lake of the same name and patched against steep mountains that are known for their salt deposits. Salt has been mined here since pre-historic times, and many civilizations have left their traces in this region. Images of Hallstatt are famous throughout the world. I stopped off in the picturesque village of St. Wolfgang, located on another one of the beautiful Alpine lakes that dot the region. Driving past another popular resort town called St. Gilgen I made my way towards Salzburg, Mozart's birth town and one of Austria's most famous tourist destinations. I had about 3 hours to explore Salzburg, so I took a walk in the old city centre and hiked up to the Mönchsberg which features the largest fortress castle in Central Europe, the imposing Castle of Hohensalzburg ... | | Austria Travel Graz: Uhrturm featuring a great view of the city Duration : 136 Seconds Thisvideo clip was taken on August 1, 2007 during my trip to Austria, my home country. I started my day off with a quick hike with two of my friends through the Raabklamm (Raab Gorge), a deep river valley that is cut into the surrounding limestone cliffs and features numerous wooden bridges and trails that snake through the narrow valley. Then I had a lovely Austrian lunch at a rural restaurant and made friends with some freely grazing cows. Finally I went on an excursion to the Styrian provincial capital of Graz. A city of about 250000 it is the second largest city in Austria, and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Graz has one of the best preserved medieval and Renaissance city centres in Europe. Its location surrounding the Schlossberg (Castle Hill), framed by mountains on three sides is beautiful. I explored the main shopping street Herrengasse, the Main Square (Hauptplatz) with its stunning City Hall, and walked across the newly built Murinsel (Island in the Mur River). I also took the Schlossbergbahn (the Schlossberg funicular) and explored the main sites on this famous hill including the Uhrturm (the clock tower) which originally dates back to the 1200s and was preserved due to a ransom payment by the citizens when Napoleon ordered the castle on the hill destroyed in 1809. Beautiful 360 degree views open up from this elevated location. My fascination was captured by the many beautiful hidden courtyards that grace Graz's old quarters. I also ... | | Austria Travel: A peaceful country drive through rural Styria Duration : 120 Seconds Thisvideo clip was taken on July 31, 2007 during my trip to Austria, my home country. First I did some discoveries in my home town of Weiz: I explored the famous pilgrimage church called Weizbergkirche which was built in late baroque style and consecrated in 1776. What astounded me was the size and beauty of this church, considering that it serves a city of barely more than 9000 people. Then I moved on to another architectural gem in the Weiz area: Schloss Thannhausen or Thannhausen Castle was built in the 1500s and features a gorgeous Renaissance courtyard with three levels of arcades and is still often used for concerts and special events. After an interesting drive through the Weizklamm (Weiz Gorge) on a main road framed by vertical limestone cliffs that is so narrow that often it doesn't accommodate two cars side by side I arrived in the mountain village of St. Kathrein am Offenegg, a popular tourism destination with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains. Then I explored another touristic highlight of the Weiz area: the "Katerloch", one of the largest limestone caves in Austria with a wide variety of dripstones, many of which are reminiscent of animals, human beings and other identifiable objects. The highlight of this cave is the so-called "Seenparadies", the "Lake Paradise", an underground lake located 135 metres below the cave entrance. I had a chance to interview the operator of the cave after visiting this underground wonderland and learning about the ...
