The Vienna Opera Ball (Wiener Opernball in German) is an annual Austrian society event which takes place in the building of the Vienna State Opera on the Thursday preceding Ash Wednesday. Together with the New Year Concert, the Opera Ball is one of the highlights of the Viennese carnival season. The dress code is evening dress: white tie and tails for men; floor-length ballgowns for women. Each year, almost overnight, the auditorium of the Vienna State Opera is turned into a large ballroom. On the eve of the event, the rows of seats are removed from the stalls, and a new floor, level with the stage, is built. Austrian businessman Richard Lugner has attracted famous people as his guests to the ball. Among them have been Sophia Loren, Geri Halliwell, Carmen Electra, Pamela Anderson, and, in 2007, Paris Hilton. In a joint venture, ORF and BR broadcast live from the ball for several hours each year. The Opera Ball was first held in 1936, but was suspended during World War II. It was revived after the war; it has been held annually ever since, with the exception of 1991, when it was cancelled due to the Persian Gulf War. Since 2001 Elisabeth Gürtler has been the chairlady (supervising organizer) of the Vienna Opera Ball. It was a part of the Pan-Slavist movement, with the intention of uniting all of the territories containing South Slav populations annexed by Austria-Hungary. The Black Hand's connections to the June 28, 1914 assassination in Sarajevo of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria is considered to have been the main catalyst to the start of World War I. Just prior to World War I, under the orders of the Chief of Serbian Military Intelligence, Serbian Military Officers and remnants of the Black Hand organized and facilitated the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria on occasion of his visit to Sarajevo, Bosnia. The Austro-Hungarian investigation of the assassination rounded up all but one of the assassins and also much of the underground railroad that had been used to transport the assassins and their weapons from Serbia to Sarajevo.

SOCIETY lud die jüngst in Österreich akkreditierten Diplomaten der Botschaften in Wien zu einem Abend im Bank Austria Kunstforum ein, wo die Gäste in den Genuss einer Führung durch die äußerst erfolgreiche Frida-Kahlo-Ausstellung kamen. Diplomaten aus mehr als fünfzig Ländern ließen sich diese Gelegenheit nicht entgehen. Als besonderes Zuckerl gab es in der anschließenden Tombola ein iPad zu gewinnen (auf dem SOCIETY übrigens gelesen werden kann). Für das leibliche Wohl sorgte das China-Restaurant Sichuan mit exquisiten Köstlichkeiten der südwestchinesischen Küche.

The Austrian duo Attwenger turn Upper Austrian folk music and wry local wisdom into madcap backbeats and funky, flaring accordion. It's The Cramps parachuting into a mountain village street fest for a punk spree, or The Pogues punning in Alpine slang to dancefloor-friendly samples. It's folk trip-hop, psychedelic and feral polka. Part of a cross-genre outbreak of creativity in Austria—where rappers sit in with neo-trad bands and DJs deconstruct roots music with unabashed glee—Attwenger hear bass lines and funky beats in salty expressions and rural Alpine wisecracks. They hear defiance and political critique in traditional dance songs and ballad. They know how Saul Williams and Hank Williams, techno and Chuck Berry, can find a perfect, unexpected place in the spirited folk flow. The indie-gone-Alpine party comes to SXSW for the band's US debut March, 2012. The band will also travel to New Orleans and New York. Syrian Activists, many of whom are Kurdish, stormed the Syria Embassy in Vienna to protest the Regime's killing of Kurdish Opposition Leader, Mashall Tammo. Yes, Dictator Bashar Assad killed this Syrian Kurdish Opposition Leader yesterday as part of a Regime campaign to kill off all of the leadership of the pro Democracy movement. Mashaal Tammo, one of the most active Kurdish leaders in the Syrian Kurdish community, and a highly respected figure across all segments of Syrian society, was born in Derbassiyeh in 1958. He was a resident of Qamishli, and was an agricultural engineer. He was married and had four sons and two daughters. Mashaal Tammo was assassinated on Friday, October 7, 2011 in a residence in the city of Qamishli. He had survived an assasination attempt on September 8, 2011. Tammo was the spokesperson for the Kurdish Future Movement Party, and was one of the most prominent political leaders among the Kurdish community. He had served as one of the leaders of the Kurdish Popular Union Party in Syria for more than two decades. Mashaal Tammo left the Kurdish Popular Union Party at the end of 1999 and founded, along with other activists, the Committees for the Revival of Civil Society in Syria. In Qamishli, Tammo also formed the Badr Khan Cultural Forum, an organization that promoted topics of interest to the Syrian community in general, and the Kurdish community in particular.
