What we can learn from Sepp Holzer's Permaculture Farm in Austria Sepp Holzer, a man who not only produces food in a very unlikely location, at a high and frigid altitude in Austria, but is also growing very unlikely crops there as well -- and all without the use of chemicals, and with minimal input of human labour. I guess you could call him a European counterpart of people like Bill Mollison and Masanobu Fukuoka -- as all three independently discovered ways of working with nature that save money and labour and that don't degrade the environment, but actually improve it. In Holzer's case, he was effectively running a permaculture farm for more than two decades before he even realised his unconventional approach could be termed 'permaculture'.

Campaign battle. Prussia (human) vs. Austria. In the game, Austria moved a army to intercept the smallest of 3 Prussian corps moving against Vienna. The battle took place near the modern town of Powang, Austria. The Austrians moved their infantry against the Prussian line and quickly had their left overwhelmed by Prussian infantry and cavalry attacks. The Austrians also did not have fire by rank and their center, while outnumbering the Prussians, could not break through and eventually routed under withering Prussian fire. The Prussians also took out the Austrian cannon with two cavalry charges from units hidden in the woods. The Austrians also made a push to take the farming house and the orchard and the fighting was bitter and hard fought. A final charge by the Grenadiers and fierce hand to hand finally pushed the Austrians out of the orchard. The final Austrian attack was by a unit of irregular infantry against the flanking Prussian units, but it was attacked by two sides and routed.

Jakob celebrated his 7th birthday on a small organic farm at the center of Mutters, Austria. It has been passed down since 1727 and possibly longer. All records were lost in that year due to a fire that burned most of the village. The church across the street still has the original doorways and walls from 1510. The farmer operates as an organic producer of milk and a variety of crops with fields outside of town. Local townspeople walk up to a milk machine attached to the house to purchase their milk directly from him. In the southernmost tip of Salzburg Land in Lungau the Siberia of Austria, Sepp Holzer, farmer and forester, does farming of a different kind on his mountain property. Contrary to all conventional rules and despite annual average temperatures of 4.5 °C and an altitude of between 900m 1400m he has created an edible, paradisiacal landscape and caused quite a stir in so doing. In forty years of observing nature, of unrelenting joyful experimentation and fighting government agencies, he has succeeded in convincing his opponents of his way of farming, which means adhering to the laws of nature. Holzer states: Variety instead of uniformity, for all plants and animals have a meaningful function. He completely refrains from using pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers. Sepp Holzers golden rule for achieving success in farming and the basic principles of permaculture: Cooperate with nature instead of fighting it. Observe nature to determine which plants support one another. Since 1962 when he took over his fathers farm at the age of 19, Sepp Holzer and his wife have operated a perfectly functioning permaculture system without ever having heard the term permaculture before. Laid out in terraces, similar to rice fields in Asia, his 46-hectare farm greatly differs from the surrounding pine monocultures.
