In solidarity with the 10 animal rights activists in Austria who have been rounded up and jailed without even being charged, NYC activists staged a protest at the Austrian consulate today. Dr. Martin Balluch, Austrian activist and head of Verein Gegen Tierfabriken (Association Against Animal Factories) has been on a hunger strike since his arrest (this is day 15) and the Austrian government is planning on hospitalizing him and force feeding him on Friday. A message to the Austrian Government: The animal rights community demands the release of our activist comrades! ***** On May 21st special forces of the Austrian police forced entry to 23 homes of animal right activists across Austria. 14 persons were charged with suspectedforming of a criminal organisation (§278a of the Austrian penal code) in connection with direct animal right actions. Ten persons were arrested and are in prison as suspects. At first nine were sent to the Vienna Neustadt prison and one to Innsbruck who has been brought to Vienna Neustadt on 28.05. Fiveprisoners are in hungerstrike at the moment, at least one since the 21.05. (date today: 29.05.). The organisation die tierbefreier eV is also affected by this wave of repression. People are threatened by penalties of up to 5 years in jail. Their only crime is to be active in associations and to support disturbing positions. With a very extensive application of anti-terror laws (article 278 of the penal code), the Austrian justice is attacking animal rights activists. The national park Hohe Tauern is located in the heart of the Austrian Alps and covers large parts of the Tirol, Salzburg and Karintian regions. The total area of the park is currently almost 1200 square kilometers. The idea to establish a national park in the Austrian Alps arose around the turn of the century. It took more than 80 years to this idea into practice. Apart from protecting the nature in this alpine area, the objective is to bring the natural wealth to the attention of as many people as possible. The park has especially vulnerable peripheral and core areas. The peripheral area, where people live and work, partially shapes the land. Meadows, production forests and economic activity. This cultural heritage, built by the inhabitants in the last centuries, is further maintained and looked after. Nature and culture, hand in hand - that is the key issue. Nowadays there are still places with production forests, although this number is gradually being reduced. Natural rejuvenation is being given a chance. Depending on the altitude and climate, the area can be divided into rocky, mountainous Alps, alpine grasslands, larch/beech forest, spruce forest, broad-leaved and mixed forest and, all the way down, the mountain dales. Each has its' own plant and animal communities. Best known are, of course, the edelweiss and the mountain marmot, or in German Murmeltier.
