New Islamic studies campus opens in Vienna
Duration : 116 Seconds

The new campus for training of Islamic Studies teachers opened doors with an official ceremony. The event was attended by Austrian government representatives and diplomats. The purpose of the campus is to prepare its students to teach Islamic religious studies to children and high-school students: The new building will initially train 160 teachers in Islamic religious studies, but the school supervisors say the interest in the subject is growing among the Muslim community. The new building also has its own library and a big room for prayers: the opening of the school is seen as a right move to cater for a genuine need among the Muslim community in Vienna, whose students finally have the proper place and support for their Islamic studies The Islamic religious community, which has co-sponsored the establishment of the new campus, welcomed the start of its work. Amina Baghadjati, spokesperson for the Islamic Religious community, believes providing a proper learning and teaching environment for Islamic Studies is a step in the right direction. At present Austria has some 55000 registered Muslim high-school students who also attend Islamic Religious Studies. They are taught by a total of 410 teachers at about 2000 locations across the country - none of which has the capacity of the new campus. www.presstv.ir

'Pastafarianism' Redefines Religious Headgear
Duration : 120 Seconds

(Image Source: The Washington Post) BY CHELSEA MCGARTLAND An Austrian man has won the right to wear a pasta strainer on his head as a form of religious headgear. But is this a victory for religious expression or an elaborate publicity stunt for secularism? Euronews explains this very bizarre story: "In Austria, an atheist has been allowed to appear in the photo on his driving license wearing a pasta strainer on his head. Nico Alm applied for the license three years ago. He donned the sieve in a response to the recognition of confessional headgear in official photographs." Alm is a member of the very real -- Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It's a satirical religion created in 2005. He applied for the license to draw attention to a rule exempting religious groups from removing their head coverings. But the Austrian police insist this was never ABOUT religion. The BBC quotes a police spokesman. "'The photo was not approved on religious grounds. The only criterion for photos in driving licence applications is that the whole face must be visible ... the licence has been ready since October 2009 -- it was not collected, that's all there is to it.'" But atheist blogger PZ Myers points out -- if Alm's religious protest wasn't a factor, why did the police make him take this next unusual extra step? "The only thing that wasn't fairly done here is that the authorities required that he submit to a psychological evaluation to determine if he was sane enough to drive. Do they ...

Islam growing significantly in Austria
Duration : 155 Seconds

Official records suggest a dramatic growth in conversions from Christianity to Islam, in the predominantly Christian European country of Austria, Press TV reports. "We see that people have spiritual longing that they feel there is something missing in their lives, if there is no dimension, no horizon as to the hereafter, or where am I? Why am I here?" Says Mr. Bagajati, an Austrian convert to Islam. Austria is a predominantly Catholic Christian European country of over eight million people with strong and deep historical roots in Christianity.

Prayercast | Austria
Duration : 109 Seconds

Located in the heart of Europe, Austria has a long, rich history in music, art, and culture. The names of Mozart, Schubert, Freud, Wittgenstein and Klimt are known internationally for their accomplishments. The beautiful scenery of the Eastern Alps and Danube River Valley in Austria attracts tourists from all over the world. Vienna, its capital, hosts the headquarters of several well-known international organizations as well as an extensive branch of the United Nations. As a gateway and center for trading between Eastern and Western Europe, Austria has always had a policy for neutrality. It enjoys a prosperous economy and a high standard of living. But even with a modern mindset and a focus on human rights, the Austrian people live with high suicide, alcoholism and abortion rates. The Roman Catholic and Reformed Church are recognized as state churches by the Austrian constitution. New legislation in 1998 has restricted religious freedoms in Austria. This has impacted the smaller, but growing evangelical churches. Three-quarters of the population are Roman Catholic, but only nine percent of the people attend church. That number is decreasing with news of recent sex scandals in the Catholic Church. The number of Austrians estimated to have involvement with the occult outnumbers church attendees, and about ten percent of the population claims to have no religion at all.

Benedict XVI: Family and the Religious Foundations of Society
Duration : 52 Seconds

Policies in favor of the family and the recognition of the positive role of religion in society are two of the topics touched upon by the Pope in his address to the new Ambassador of Austria to the Holy See. During the presentation of credentials of the ambassador, the Pope stated that Austria is a country in which the peaceful coexistence of different religions and cultures is a long tradition. The recognition of religious freedom allows the Church to exercise its various activities to benefit society as a whole. As for the family, Benedict XVI reiterated that it is the first and essential cell of society, based on the marriage between one man and woman, and needs the protection of the state. Finall ...

CNN: Religion to become extinct experts predict
Duration : 184 Seconds

Organized religion will all but vanish eventually from nine Western-style democracies, a team of mathematicians predict in a new paper based on census data stretching back 100 years. It won't die out completely, but "religion will be driven toward extinction" in countries including Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands, they say. It will also wither away in Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland and Switzerland, they anticipate. They can't make a prediction about the United States because the US census doesn't ask about religion, lead author Daniel Abrams told CNN. But nine other countries provide enough data for detailed mathematical modeling, he said. religion.blogs.cnn.com

Mystery Maze - Austria
Duration : 485 Seconds

As more of us turn away from institutional religion, what becomes of our need of spirituality and contemplation? In this report we look at the millennia-old human fascination with labyrinths. "If you have the image of the labyrinth in your mind, again and again you can find the courage to pursue news paths", says Gernot. From Theseus and the Minotaur to the first Benedictine monks, labyrinths have served as an allegory for the complex journey of life since the start of civilisation. For Berthold, even today, walking the maze "is a path to one's own centre".
