Salzburg, the inner city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is spread out below the brooding presence of the Hohensalzburg fortress, the churches, squares and alleyways, which today represents a long-disappeared Europe. For many, Salzburg is the quintessential Austria, offering the best of the country's Baroque architecture, subalpine scenery and a musical heritage largely provided by the city's most famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. I took a journey to Salzburg in August 2004 on the final days of my Vienna sojourn on the occasion of the ICA (International Council on Archives) Congress.

Såizburg means literally "Salt Castle" and is the fourth-largest city in Austria and the capital city of the federal state of Salzburg. Salzburg's "Old Town" (Altstadt) has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centres north of the Alps. It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The city is noted for its Alpine setting. Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In the mid-20th century, the city was the setting for parts of the American musical and film The Sound of Music, which features famous landmarks in Austria. Early in the 19th century, the need was recognised for a railway through the picturesque Semmering area, nicknamed "Zauberberg". Until then people had to cross this area by foot or stage-coach. Building the railway cost over a thousand lives, mainly deaths from typhoid and cholera. The daredevils of the mountain railway pioneers have built 16 viaducts, 15 tunnels, 129 bridges and 142 special structures. Hallstatt, Upper Austria is a village in the Salzkammergut, a region in Austria. It is located near the Lake Hallstättersee. The village also gave its name to the early Iron Age Hallstatt culture and is a World Heritage Site for Cultural Heritage. To reach Hallstatt you will first need to catch 2 hours train... from Linz (or any of the station along the way). The train will stop at a small train station located on the eastern side of Lake Hallstatt, and from there you will need to catch a short boat ride across the lake in order to reach Hallstatt village, which is located on the western side of the lake. Nowadays there is a tunnel connecting the village to the outside world by road, but it is still much more interesting to reach there the old fashion way, ie first by train then by boat. It was raining when we visited the place, but it is still no doubt one of the most unique and beautiful places we have visited over the years. Highly recommended.
