A lecture given by Prof. George Bournoutian on February 11, 2009, at the National Association for Armenian Studies center in Belmont, MA. Siméon of Erevan was Catholicos of the Armenian Church from 1763 to 1780. He reorganized the Holy See of Echmiadzin, restored its spiritual authority, increased its wealth and political influence, and in 1771 established the first printing press at Echmiadzin, the first ever in Armenia. After assuming the leadership of the Church, Siméon gathered all the documents and manuscripts which were in the Echmiadzin archives and, after examining them, wrote Jambr, Siméons term for archival chamber. Prof. George Bournoutian has just published the first English translation, with extensive annotations, of this important work, it as part of Mazdas Armenian Studies Series. Jambr begins with the history and apostolic origins of the Armenian Church and the construction of the Holy See of Echmiadzin. It describes the move of the Holy See from its original site to other locations, because of invasions and other uncertainties, and its final return from Cilicia to Echmiadzin in 1441. This enormous work (some 500 pages in Bournoutians edition) provides a wealth of other information that might otherwise have been lost and is one of the most important primary sources on the history of the Armenian Church, as well as the history of Armenia under Muslim rule. 2793 years have passed since the foundation of our city. The name of the city of Yerevan goes back to the period of Urartu and originates from the name "Erebuni". It is known from the Urartian studies that the Urartian sound "B" sounds like "V" in Armenian. Thus, the name Erebuni has been transformed and has become Yerevan. Yerevan is located on the edge of the Ararat valley on both banks of the river Hrazdan, at an altitude of 900 - 1200 above sea level. The climate is acutely continental with hot and dry summer and relatively severe winter. By its administrative border the city is adjacent to the marzes Aragatsotn, Ararat, Armavir and Kotayk.

I went to Signagi, which is a few kilometers uphill from Tsnori, and a much more significant town, especially when it comes to tourism. So in Tbilisi I randomly picked Signagi to be my next destination. Signagi is a small, idyllic mountain town in east Georgia, just over 100km east of Tbilisi. It is actually one of Georgia's smallest towns with only a population of a few thousand, but it is historically a significant town with lot of historical monuments, and it is an important tourism center as well as an important producer of wine and carpets. The town has been inhabited since ancient times, but the name Signagi firts appeared in early 18th century. A bus from Tbilisi took about two hours and it left from eastern bus station, which was a bit harder to find than the norhtern one. I went there an hour too early, because I wasn't really sure when the minibus was going to leave - there's only a few in one way. During the extra hour I went to wonder around in a local market nearby and it was again amazing to see all the things they sell, from clothes and toys to honey nuts and mushmellows. In a remote part of the market I found an old lady who was selling old money and pins, mostly notes from soviet union decades ago. I had to buy I few, after all ...
