The dramatic increase of older persons in Armenia brings about many challenges for the whole society. UNECE and the Government of Armenia have developed the Road Map for Mainstreaming Ageing to help ensure that these growing numbers of older people are integrated into Armenian society, economically, socially and culturally; that their needs are met, their potential fulfilled and their contributions recognized. Armenian Revolutionary Federation Supreme Council of Armenia chairman Armen Rustamian Wednesday warned that Armenia was embroiled in a societal crisis, saying the country was being controlled by a "wealthy class" and citing the absence of democratic reforms, during a press briefing. As a result, Rustamian said, there does not exist a government that is ruled by the people, but rather a plutocracy that is governed by an elite class of wealthy Armenians who engage in wide-spread corruption and disregard for rule of law. The performance is of Four Folk Dances from Armenia and Russia. The first two dances - Sepastia Bar and Ambi Dagitz - are from Armenia which is known for its "talking hands" and lyrical music. The two following dances - Ya da Kalinushka Lomala and Moy Muzhenka - show the gliding step and character of traditional Russian dance. Our dancers have travelled from different groups and classes all over the country to perform today, and they are a representative sample of the Society for International Folk Dancing (SIFD). Any SIFD dancer who was prepared to put in the time for rehearsal and travel was invited to take part today. Our colourful variety of authentic costumes - which are either Russian or Armenian - are from different regions of these two countries. The SIFD (www.sifd.org) was founded in 1946 as a non-political, non sectarian body to promote and teach the folk dances of all nations, and to demonstrate the enjoyment that their performance can give. It encourages the knowledge and practice of, and research into folk dance, folk costume and music by means of classes, DVDs, CDs, instruction books and residential courses. The many classes and groups throughout the UK also provide an enjoyable source of recreational dance for all ages and abilities, with all the attendant benefits to health and well-being. The Society for the Defense of Azerbaijani Women's rights held a round table as part of their project on the "role of international institutions in the peace process". Novella Jafaroglu, the chairwoman, spoke about the significance of the event. The project is being financed by the British Embassy. During the round table, the preparations for peace in Azerbaijani and Armenian societies were discussed. NGO representatives said that the two countries will continue to be neighbors regardless of how Karabakh conflict is resolved. The group focused on the importance of NGOs and the media in supporting this process. They said that meetings between representatives of both nations tested to what extent people are ready for peace, emphasizing that there are people in both parties who are ready to resolve the conflict. The round table also emphasized the importance of organizing meetings with representatives of both parties, and bringing peace to the top of the media agenda. However, arguments against peace building were also heard during the meeting. Some participants alleged that Armenia is aiming to secure permanent possession of the Azerbaijan territories they are occupying, and that Armenia is not sincere in its involvement in the peace negotiations, they haven't demonstrated sincerity.
