Hakob Hakobyan - Armenian Painter Born 1923 in Egypt to refugee Armenian parents living abroad since the World War I-era genocide of the Armenians by the Ottoman Turks, Hakobian studied at the Melkonian Armenian school "The work of the Armenian painter Hakob Hakobyan is a most important contribution to the artistic culture of Armenia. Hakobyan came to settle in his historical homeland, Armenia, from Egypt when he was already a mature painter - in 1962. Before that, the public had a chance to see his works at several exhibitions in Yerevan, Moscow and other cities. Hakobyan's early creations are small-size oils: one -figure compositions in interiors and still lifes. The painter strove to convey typological rather than personal characteristics. His personages are social or occupational types - a tailor, a waiter, and so on. The static figures circumscribed by a space limited in depth, their mood of constraint and isolation suggest a lonely, miserable existence. The democratic trend evident in the choice of subjects and characters, the sympathy for the "little man" were the hall-marks of Hakobyan's early pieces. The subject matter of the paintings done in the 1950s determines their stylistic idiom. The color scheme is ascetic, nearly monochrome, the outlines of the figures and the objection the interiors are dark, the forms are somewhat schematic; last but not least, the circumscribed and cramped space further enhances the isolation of the people and things portrayed ...

Armenian painter (1928-1975), studied in Yerevan and Leningrad (Saint Petersburg), had been exhibiting fro 1956. Avetisyan is one of those Armenian artists who put the color back into painting. "Put the color back into painting"-such an expression might seem strange, but if you go into the Matenadaran and look through the yellowed pages of the ancient manuscripts there, you will understand what is meant: there on the parchment, in all their splendor, shine the bright, sonorous colors- blue, yellow, green, red... Color plays an enormous role in the work of Avetisyan. In the night of the January 1, 1972, while the artist was in Djadjur with his family, his Yerevan studio was burnt down together with a large portion of his best canvases selected for a one-man show. Jean Carzou (Garnik Zulumyan 1907-2000). Armenian painter, graduated from School of Architecture in Paris, had been participating exhibitions and shows in Paris. He has created unique landscape paintings, portraits, still lives, had personal exhibitions all over the world. Carzou is known as a scene-painter and illustrator of books. Attended the Free Academies of Monparas. 1939 first one-man show in Paris. 1956 became knight of "Legion of honour". 1979 elected member of Academy of Art. 1992 one of the temples of Monox painted by Carzou, was converted into his museum. Minas Avetisian was born on the 20th of July 1928, in a little Armenian village-Djadjur. Leningrad, with its Academy of Fine Arts and its Hermitage, played a significant role in Avetisian's becoming an artist. Avetisian always remembers with gratitude his teachers, Johannson, Zaitsev and Khudiakov: they never hindered the natural expression of his own artistic individuality. Both in his student years and after graduating from the Academy, Avetisian traveled widely around Armenia, eagerly seeking out historical monuments; he studied the Armenian miniature and the works of the greatest Armenian artists, above all, Saryan's. Avetisian's real emergence as an artist was at the "Exhibition of Five" in Yerevan (1962), where he revealed himself as a mature painter with a bright individuality. Numerous specialists and visitors to the exhibition thought highly of his work. In the presence of a large group of visitors and representatives of the press, the French artist Jean Lurcat exclaimed: "This artist rivals France's best painters". Avetisian follows the national traditions in painting, yet he never resorts to slavish imitation or stylization.
