Unusually Dry Winter Threatens to Devastate Farmers in Shirak
Duration : 211 Seconds

This winter has been particularly rough for farmers in Armenia's Shirak region, where 17000 hectors of cultivated land is in danger of going bad. The area is usually covered in snow this time of the year, which insulates newly planted crops, preventing frostbite and providing much needed water for the crops. Farmers here have no insurance against the whether and the local administration cannot predict what the temperatures will be like in the coming weeks. Local farmers can only hope that temperatures drop or snow falls.

How to Make Peach Preserves
Duration : 286 Seconds

October 2011—Tigran and Arusyak teach you how to make peach preserves. Special thanks to Susanna, a bread-baker, who let us use her kitchen for the process! So far, COAF has already given 6000 people the opportunity to farm their land, against the odds in the desertous region of Armavir, Armenia. Please visit COAF's website to learn how you can help save a generation: www.coafkids.org Also, if you liked this video, please like COAF's page on Facebook to follow more great causes! www.facebook.com/coafkids Agriculture is central to the economy of rural Armenia. However, more than half of the families living in rural Armenia, including the 20000 residents of COAF's cluster, lack either access to fertile land or the water to irrigate their land. Furthermore, they are unaware of the latest farming technologies and lack the necessary financing to have a secure stake in the land they till. As a result, acute poverty, and the related problems of hunger, social inadequacy, and environmental degradation, persist. Many rural villages were artificially created during the Soviet era to provide employees for large factories. Once those factories closed, the people in these towns and villages were left with now useless job skills. Thus, it is vital that rural Armenians learn to generate income by better planning and managing their farms, that they have access to new technology and financing, and that they optimize their use of land with improved irrigation systems and pathways market ...

How to Make Armenian Yogurt
Duration : 247 Seconds

Anush and Emin fom the village of Shenik teach you how to make Armenian yogurt. Special thanks to Gohar, our gracious host who let us use her home! Read a blog entry by the filmmakers here: coafkids.org The cow, milk, and subsequently yogurt in the video was made possible by a collaboration between COAF and the Heifer Project. An international organization, Heifer International works with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. It does this by giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief. The goal of this partnership has been to create sustainable economic growth through an investment in smallholder cash crop and subsistence farming communities. Part of the agreement between the Heifer‐COAF program and the beneficiary community is that in exchange for livestock and training, families will donate one of the animal's offspring to another family in need. The investment this project has made in the region is considered a "living loan." The collaboration between Heifer International and COAF has provided 80 families across six villages with livestock and farmer trainings. 15 of those 80 families have cycled through the program and passed on the offspring of their livestock to another family. To date, 95 families in total have been directly impacted by this innovative program. To learn how you can join our cause, please visit coafkids.org. Applied Science and Its Results
Duration : 135 Seconds

May 2010 - This video demonstrates rust suspected domestic field adjacent to rust resistant wheat fields planted by ATG seeds. Research based on seed trial plots during the last 20 years has provided farmers with vital information to select seeds suitable for their land. Farmers in Armenia encountered an unusually rainy season in the spring of 2010. Grain growers who planted certified ATG wheat seeds harvested higher yields in income. Many, however, who planted unknown seed varieties, were not so lucky. Their crop was affected with rust. They lost a year of labor, hard work, and income. The 2010 wheat fields are evidence that applies science methodology used over the years is yielding results. Donate Now For A Good Cause: partners.guidestar.org

Dickson Despommier - farmy wertykalne - Vertical farming (2)
Duration : 142 Seconds

Dickson D. Despommier is a microbiologist, ecologist and Professor of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University. He conducts research on intracellular parasitism and teaches courses on Parasitic Diseases, Medical Ecology and Ecology. In recent years, Despommier has received considerable media coverage for his ideas on vertical farming.[1][2] He developed his concept of vertical farming with graduate students in a medical ecology class in 1999. Vertical farming is a concept that argues that it is economically and environmentally viable to cultivate plant or animal life within skyscrapers, or on vertically inclined surfaces. The idea of a vertical farm has existed at least since the early 1950s and built precedents are well documented by John Hix in his canonical text "The Glass House"[1] Irrespective of their origins, there are three classifications debated by contemporary scholars. 1) The phrase "vertical farming" was coined by Gilbert Ellis Bailey in 1915. In his book "Vertical Farming", Bailey defined the earliest meanings and methods of vertical farming: " "Vertical Farming", to coin a name, is the keynote of a new agriculture that has come to stay, for inexpensive explosives enable the farmer to farm deeper, to go down to increase area, and to secure larger crops. Instead of spreading out over more land he concentrates on less land and becomes an intensive rather than an extensive agriculturist, and soon learns that it is more profitable to ...
