The Armenian civilization had its beginnings nearly 5000 years ago. Armenia lies in the highlands surrounding the Biblical mountains of Ararat. The original Armenian name for the country was Hayk, later Hayastan (Armenian: Հայաստան), translated as the land of Haik, and consisting of the name Haik and the suffix '-stan' (land). The name Armenia was given to the country by the surrounding states, and it is traditionally derived from Armenak or Aram (the great-grandson of Haik's great-grandson, and another leader who is, according to Armenian tradition, the ancestor of all Armenians). In the Bronze Age, several states flourished in the area of Greater Armenia, including the Hittite Empire (at the height of its power), Mitanni (South-Western historical Armenia), and Hayasa-Azzi (1600-1200 BC). Soon after the Hayasa-Azzi were the Nairi (1400-1000 BC) and the Kingdom of Ararat (1000-600 BC), who successively established their sovereignty over the Armenian Highlands. Each of the aforementioned Armenian tribes participated in the ethnogenesis of the Armenian people.[1] Yerevan, the modern capital of Armenia, was founded in 782 BC by king Argishti I. The Iron Age kingdom of Ararat was replaced by the Orontid dynasty. Following Persian and Macedonian rule, the Artaxiad dynasty from 190 BC gave rise to the Kingdom of Armenia which rose to the peak of its influence under Tigranes II before falling under Roman rule. In 301, Arsacid Armenia was the first sovereign nation to ...

Hamazkayin's Mosaic IV Celebrates Diverse Sounds of Armenian Culture
Duration : 292 Seconds

The Hamazkayin Armenian Educational and Cultural Society hosted its fourth Mosaic concert on Saturday, bringing together a diverse set of musicians to perform at the beautiful San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. Concert-goers were taken on a journey with global rockers, Viza. Armenian Space Station gave the audience an epic performance of compositions incorporating Aram Khatchadourian's stylings adapted by Greg Hosharian on keyboard with the metal drum beats of Barrett Yeretsian. Echocell fused the organic with the electronic to produce a riveting Armenian soul experience. A Splinter guided guests on a journey through the humorous stories that make up the Armenian reality, while Armenian Public Radio connected the audience to their roots through an acoustic revival of Armenian folk melodies performed by Saro Koujakian, Ryan Demirjian and Mher Ajamian. The evening's master of ceremonies, Lory Tatoulian, presented the bands through a narrative of comedic introductions. Meanwhile, in the courtyard, DJ Bei Ru spinned his tunes of funk and soul during intermission. Guests were also served cocktails and Middle Eastern eats provided by the Hungry Nomad gourmet food truck, a contemporary spin off of the family-owned and operated Sasoun Bakery. The historic San Gabriel Mission Playhouse was built in 1927, the magnificent and opulent theater has genteel side boxes and chandeliers that replicate the lanterns used on Spanish galleons which sailed around the tip of South America en route ...

Rate & Subscribe Armenian irregular units, also known as Fedayees (Armenian: Ֆէտայի, "Fētahi"/"Fedayee", also Armenian: կամավոր, Kamavor, meaning "volunteer") were Armenian civilians who left their families to form armed brigades. Armenian fedayees were volunteers and, literally, "one who is ready to sacrifice his life" (Fedayee fidā'ī,Arabic: فدائيون‎) for his people[1]). The term Fedayee was the Turkish term used by many centuries ago and also used by Armenians in the Ottoman Empire who formed guerrilla organizations and armed bands in reaction to the unchecked murder of Armenians and the pillage of Armenian villages by criminals, tribal Kurdish forces, and Hamidian guards during the reign of Abdul Hamid II. Most of the fedayee leaders were members of the Armenian national liberation movement. Their ultimate goal was always to gain Armenian autonomy (Armenakans) or independence (Dashnaks, Hunchaks) depending on their ideology and the degree of oppression visited on Armenians. This can be seen in the Dashnak slogan "Ազատութիւն կամ Մահ" (Azatutyun kam Mah), which literally translates as "Liberty or Death".
