www.Style.am Pret-a-Porter Yerevan is the only seasonal fashion shows event in Armenia, that aims to provide a platform for Armenian fashion designers with the goal of promoting Armenia's ready-to-wear fashion, raising professional standards and to enhancing the growth of the fashion industry. On May 4 "Fashion Road: Dialogue Across Borders" project was launched at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts with the opening speeches of PR and Marketing Director of the Cafesjian Center for the Arts Anna Simonyan and British Council Armenia Director Arevik Saribekyan, after which a press-conference was held at the Star Landing, in participation of HE Crina Prunariu, Ambassador of Romania; HE Hans-Jochen Schnidt, Ambassador of Germany; HE Charles Lonsdale, Ambassador of Great Britain; Mrs. Varduhi Khechoyan, Representative of the EU in Foreign Affairs Ministry of Armenia; Mrs. Arevik Saribekyan, British Council Armenia Director; Mrs. Anna Simonyan, CCA PR and Marketing Director. "Fashion Road: Dialogue Across Borders" is a 2-year collaborative project, through which ten fashion designers from Armenia, UK, Germany, Romania, Denmark and Czech Republic will explore how the aspects of national identity are incorporated into contemporary designs. The designers will study traditional costumes in the countries, explore the role of those costumes in contemporary society, how people associate memories with clothing and how they preserve these memories. Designers will view clothing in a cultural context and use modern technologies and approaches to present their interpretation of the countries' culture and identity. The first evening of the Encounters with Art program series in 2012 was devoted to the Fashion Road project and its outcome -- the exhibition of 20 garments created by young designers from Armenia, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Romania, Czech Republic and Germany. The exhibition, titled Fashion Road: Dialogue Across Borders, opened for public in Sasuntsi Davit Garden Gallery since the morning of February 2. In the evening of the same day a special encounter with the participants of the project was organized. This public event started at the exhibition gallery, where the visitors could admire the exhibited pieces and meet the fashion designers. The evening continued at the Special Events Auditorium, where the organizers and participants presented the project. The first speaker was Ms. Armine Tadevosyan, the Vice-President of Armenian Fashion Council and the consultant of the project. She presented cultural diversity and fashion, dwelling upon how the diversity was reflected in fashion through various ornaments and patterns. Then the floor was given to the curator of the show, Mr. Tony Charalambous, who introduced the project, shedding light on how the exhibition was design and what the principles behind it were. Fashion Road: Dialogue across Borders is a two year collaborative project through which fashion designers from Armenia and Europe will look into the past for ideas and inspiration. They will study traditional costumes of Armenia, UK, Germany, Romania, Denmark and Czech Republic, explore the role of those costumes in contemporary society, and how people associate those costume with their national identity and heritage. Key to this project will be for the designers to view clothing in a cultural context and use modern technologies and approaches to present their interpretation of the countries' culture and identity.
