| | HOMENAJE A ERNESTO SABATO (June 24 1911- April 30 2011) Duration : 239 Seconds Ernesto Sabato (June 24, 1911 -- April 30, 2011), was an Argentine writer, painter and physicist. According to the BBC he "won some of the most prestigious prizes in Hispanic literature" and "became very influential in the literary world throughout Latin America". Upon his death El País dubbed him the "last classic writer in Argentine literature". Sabato was distinguished by his bald pate and brush moustache and wore tinted spectacles and open-necked shirts.[4] He was born in Rojas, a small town in Buenos Aires Province. Sabato began his studies at the Colegio Nacional de La Plata. He then studied physics at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, where he earned a Ph.D. He then attended the Sorbonne in Paris and worked at the Curie Institute. After World War II, he lost faith in science and started writing. Sabato's oeuvre includes three novels: El Túnel (1948), Sobre héroes y tumbas (1961) and Abaddón el exterminador (1974). The first of these received critical acclaim upon its publication from, among others, fellow writers Albert Camus and Thomas Mann. The second is regarded as his masterpiece, though he nearly burnt it like many of his other works. Sabato's essays cover topics as diverse as metaphysics, politics and tango. His writings led him to receive many international prizes, including the Legion of Honour (France), the Prix Médicis (Italy) and the Miguel de Cervantes Prize (Spain). By request of President Raúl Alfonsín, he presided over the CONADEP commission that ... Tags :Ernesto, Sabato, homenaje, tribute, argentine, literature, el, tunel, sobre, heroes, tumbas, nunca, mas
| | MaximsNewsNetwork: ARGENTINA: MATH, SCIENCE, LITERATURE: UNICEF Duration : 142 Seconds MaximsNewsNetwork 29 July 2009 - UNICEF: A new teaching strategy developed by UNICEF focuses on new and practical ways to teach math, literature and science. For the first six months of first grade, Maria Angel Gomez struggled to keep up with the other students. She showed little interest in her school work and was slowly falling behind. Her mother worried that she would fail and need to repeat first grade, a common problem in Argentina. But when a new approach to teaching was put in place, Maria Angel began to flourish. This innovative strategy focused on new, practical ways to teach math, literature and science. Extra attention was paid to children at risk of failing, especially in the crucial first year of school. Maria Angel's principal could hardly believe the results. "Before this program, twenty percent of the students would be retained," says Principal Susana Sanchez. "But now, we've dropped that number down to two percent." Maria Angel learned how to read, and developed a love for stories like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Her attitude toward school was transformed. "When I get older I would like to be a teacher, to teach children how to read and how to work," she says. Maria Angel shares a modest house with her mother and brother. The new teaching strategy, which was developed by UNICEF, encourages her mother to play an active role in Maria Angel's learning, a crucial element of the program. "I never finished my schooling, so at the beginning, I was thinking ... Tags :Argentina, math, science, literature, UNICEF, teaching youth, teaching, maximsnews Network

| | Oda Para Martín Fierro.Cantata. Juan Angel Navarro. Duration : 413 Seconds Cantata.Kantate. Composition of Juan Angel Navarro.2009.Poems of José Hernández (1834-1886). -"ODA PARA MARTIN FIERRO" is a crucial work for these times. It addresses current issues stemming from a timeless, central piece of Argentinian literature. It is vital to go back and come to terms with the real history of the "gaucho", and the "indio" at the particular historical juncture when Argentina was struggling to become a modern nation-. (Victor Torres). -The music of Juan Angel Navarro is inspired by deep analysis of the themes he likes to develop. The rich harmonies and sensible melodies, sometimes softer and in other moments very strong, are very expressive and warm.-(Graciela de Gyldenfeldt). José Hernández was a nineteenth century Argentine journalist and man of letters. The first part his great verse narrative, "Martín Fierro", was published in Buenos Aires in 1872. Its tremendous popularity induced the author to publish a second part, "The return of Martín Fierro" in 1879. It has become a classic on Spanish literature and most original one, for it describes the life and times of the authentic Argentine gaucho in his own language. The story of a tragic hero, one of the thousands of gauchos that have been recruited to fight against the indians over the Argentinean southern frontier during the second half of the niniteenth century. Martin Fierro is separated from his family and he is sent to the frontier, where he has to serve the army`s interests, until he runs back ... Just prior to achieving his 100th birthday, Dr. Ernesto Sábato passed away on Saturday, April 30. Besides his many written works, Dr. Sábato was also known as a steadfast activist for justice and human rights. He was selected to preside over the government agency, National Commission for Disappeared Persons, where he assisted in ending military rule and restoring democracy to the country. One of the great writers of the 20th century, Jorge Luis Borges was fascinated with Buddhism and with dreams. Amelia Barili, a longtime friend of his, will guide us in exploring the relation between these two themes and their presence in Borges's lectures and writings. Since both Borges and Buddhism believe our minds create the realities we inhabit, we will begin each class with brief contemplative practices to open to greater intuitive knowledge. Whether you are a Borges aficionado or you are reading him for the first time, you will enjoy this course. Amelia Barili is the former book review editor of the Argentine newspaper La Prensa. Her book, Jorge Luis Borges y Alfonso Reyes: La cuestión de la identidad del escritor latinoamericano, and many articles in literary journals open up new understandings of his work.
