British banks hit in Buenos Aires, Argentina over Prince William's tour in UK's Falkland Islands
Duration : 55 Seconds

Demonstrators attacked British banks in Buenos Aires to protest the arrival of Britain's Prince William in the Falkland Islands. Masked protesters marched down the streets before hurling paint bombs and rocks at bank offices as tensions over the disputed Falkland Islands continue to rise. Prince William's six-week deployment as a search and rescue helicopter pilot has angered Argentina, which claims sovereignty over the islands. The islands are nearly 300 miles off the Argentine coast and were the setting for a ten-week war in 1982 war which killed 650 Argentine troops and more than 250 British personnel before the UK ultimately claimed victory. Britain still maintains about 1000 troops on the islands, whose 3000 residents overwhelmingly wish to remain British.

4 Oct 2011 BBC News Constantine Papadopoulos is Sec Gen for International Economic Relations. Mario Blejer is Former Governor of the Central Bank of Argentina. Norman Lamont is Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer. Norman Lamont -- The ECB has capital of 5 billion euros. It has advanced money to banks in the Eurozone maybe over 400 billion. It has bought bonds over 100 billion. This is really creating a crisis possibly for the ECB. And who is guaranteeing this? Countries like Italy. Italy is the third largest guarantor of the ECB and of the bailout fund. But Italy couldn't possibly afford to pay these enormous sums of money. So what you have is countries like Italy and Spain guaranteeing a mechanism to bail out themselves. It is simply not credible. Presenter -- Do you never stop Mr Papadopoulos and look at the mess your country is in. And think borrowing more money to allow us to service the debts to other European banks is doing us no favours? Wouldn't it be better for your people to call a halt to this? Constantine Papadopoulos -- Of course not. Because if you declare a default it's like committing suicide. Because your banks will be destroyed, your economy will be cut off from the rest of the world. And we are an integral part of the European Union. Presenter -- Hang on, hang on....Mr Blejer here is living proof that it is not suicide. He was running the central bank, Argentina defaulted, it had to cut its ties to the dollar, it was messy and it was painful but ...

I come from down in the valley where mister when you're young They bring you up to do like your daddy done Me and Mary we met in high school when she was just seventeen We'd ride out of that valley down to where the fields were green We'd go down to the river And into the river we'd dive Oh down to the river we'd ride Then I got Mary pregnant and man that was all she wrote And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat We went down to the courthouse and the judge put it all to rest No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle No flowers no wedding dress That night we went down to the river And into the river we'd dive Oh down to the river we did ride I got a job working construction for the Johnstown Company But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy Now all them things that seemed so important Well mister they vanished right into the air Now I just act like I don't remember Mary acts like she don't care But I remember us riding in my brother's car Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir At night on them banks I'd lie awake And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take Now those memories come back to haunt me they haunt me like a curse Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse that sends me down to ...

Financial crisis: Learning from others mistakes (Argentina) - Part 1 of 12.flv
Duration : 395 Seconds

The United States has a lot to learn. The country was a different one, but the circumstances were pretty much the same: Documentary on the events that led to the economic collapse of Argentina in 2001 which wiped out the middle class and raised the level of poverty to 57.5%. Central to the collapse was the implementation of neo-liberal policies which enabled the swindle of billions of dollars by foreign banks and corporations. Many of Argentina's assets and resources were shamefully plundered. Its financial system was even used for money laundering by Citibank, Credit Suisse, and JP Morgan. The net result was massive wealth transfers and the impoverishment of society which culminated in many deaths due to oppression and malnutrition. Official name: Memoria del Saqueo by Fernando Solanas 2003.

A decade since Argentina's economic collapse‏
Duration : 122 Seconds

Buenos Aires, Argentina (NTN24) - Argentines take to streets to remember ten years since economic meltdown, set Christmas tree ablaze outside presidential palace. Argentines took to the streets on Tuesday ten years after a 2001 economic breakdown turned those same streets into a battleground. A decade ago, then-President Fernando de la Rua was forced to flee the country in a helicopter from the roof of the government palace as enraged citizens demonstrated. A bankrupt Argentina declared the world's biggest-ever debt default, froze bank accounts, and spiralled into chaos. The peso was severely devalued, Argentines lost billions in savings, and five presidents filed in and out of office in a matter of weeks. When the smoke had cleared, 38 demonstrators had been killed and Argentina was in shatters, without a clear leader and facing an uncertain future. Demonstrators cut roads, burned tyres, marched and chanted throughout Buenos Aires to remember the dead and continue to warn against the policies that led to the meltdown. Some left candles and messages on plaques to remember those killed in 2001, and demonstrator Diego Alejandro lauded a new generation of protesters. "We are proud to be here in the street, proud to continue with the same idea. Our dead are being vindicated, all those who died for the people's struggle. Today they aren't with us, but morally and spiritually they struggle with us. And these young people here renew themselves and come out to fight for a more ...

Argentina In Revolt- Buenos Aires & the 2001/2002 IMF Riots (English subtitles)
Duration : 1962 Seconds

IMF Confidential By Greg Palast www.gregpalast.com 15 October, 2003 ........To reduce its deficit per IMF decree, Argentina had cut $3 billion from government spending-a cut that was necessary, the authors note here, to "accomodat[e] the increase in interest obligations." These obligations, the report did not need to add, were largely to foreign creditors, including the IMF and World Bank themselves. Since 1994, in fact, Argentina's budget deficits had been entirely attributable to interest payments on foreign loans. Excluding such payments, spending had remained constant at 19 percent of GDP. Despite the visible harm caused by cuts, the new plan ordered more. This, the report promised, would "greatly improve the outlook for the remainder of 2001 and 2002, with growth expected to recover in the later half of 2001." The Bank was slightly off the mark. By December 2001, Buenos Aires' middle class, unaccustomed to hunting the streets for garbage to eat, joined the poor in mass demonstrations. How had Argentina arrived at such an impasse? In the 1990s the nation was the poster child for globalization, having followed without question the IMF and World Bank program. The "reform" plan for Argentina, as for every nation, has four steps. The first of these, capital market liberalization, was achieved by 1991's "Convertibility Plan," which pegged the Argentine peso in a one-to-one relationship with the US dollar. This peg was designed both to keep inflation low and to make deficit ...

DON'T LET "THEM" FOOL YOU WITH PHONY PAPER MONEY!

Led by Mexico and Russia, central banks from 11 countries and the Eurozone added a combined 57.9 tonnes of gold in March 2012. Mexico raised its reserves by 16.8 tonnes, Russia added 16.5, Turkey 11.5 tonnes, Kazakhstan 4.3 tonnes, Ukraine 1.2 tonnes, while other ex-Soviet republics including Tajikistan and Belarus added less than half a tonne. In percentage terms Argentina made the biggest bet on gold, upping its reserves of gold by more than 10% to 61.7 tonnes over the month. The only sellers were the Czech Republic which reduced its bullion reserves by 4500 ounces.. Bullion purchases by central banks have provided a strong underpinning for the gold price. The world's central banks added a combined 439.7 tonnes last year - an almost fifty year high. Bayram Dincer, analyst in Switzerland said: "We expect that the recent trend of the official sector being a net buyer will continue in the medium and long term. Gold will continue to be a preferred central bank reserve asset. It is currency protection and stabilization.".. Bullion bulls are now focusing on any announcements that may emanate from the US Federal "Reserve" Bank. After failing to scale the psychologically important $1800 an ounce bar at the end of February, gold has taken a few hard knocks on the way to its current trading level of around $1640. The spikes downward have all been thanks to Ben Bernanke and the US Federal Reserve and the fortunes of the precious metal seem increasingly linked to monetary policy in ...
