For the past 20 years the lake's water level has been decreasing rapidly, and it is becoming increasingly contaminated. For a long time the rainy season 2003 was a bad one. But in the last few weeks (from August on) it rained a lot and the level of Lake Chapala has risen dramatically! The rainy season 2004 was plentyfull, too and we hope for a good one in 2006! If the trend continues, it could fill Lake Chapala completely this year! We can see already the positive effects Tourism is booming, the local economy is celebrating record sales and the future looks bright. But we have to keep on defending our lake so that it never becomes endangered again! Too much is at stake! The Sociedad Amigos del Lago (Society Friends of the Lake) was founded in 1990 to help find solutions to the problems threatening Lake Chapala, and to build the public awareness and political pressure necessary to get these solutions implemented. Ruth Spencer, National Focal Point for the GEF Small Grants Programme in Antigua & Barbuda, describe her experience and the challenges of being a GEF SGP National Focal Point. She was interviewed while attending at the GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop for the Central American Region, in Belize. This series of workshops aims at keeping the GEF national focal points, convention focal points and other key stakeholders, including civil society, abreast of GEF strategies, policies and procedures and to encourage coordination. The events are an opportunity for focal points to meet with their counterparts from other countries in the region and other GEF partners to discuss and review policies and procedures and to share lessons and experiences from development and implementation of GEF projects and their integration within national policy frameworks. Cuban prodigee composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona, 1895-1963, studied piano with AC Peyrellade, Saavedra, H.de Blanck and, later, composition with Joaquín Nin. Tours in Latin América, Europe and USA. Stay in New York where he wrote for musicals, films and radio. He composed one opera, seven zarzuelas (a real treasure, I shall be back on this), few works for orchestra and chamber music, lots of world famous songs and sparkling danzas for piano full of different rythmes, colours and moods. In this video I suggest two of his danzas: 1.a la antigua, 00:00-02:02 2.danza interrumpida, 02:04-03:02 Cuban pianist, teacher and composer Frank Fernández, b. Mayarí 1944, studied in Cuba and in Moscow with Victor Merzhanov. He has given concerts and recorded in Europe, Russia, E.Asia, S.and C.América. He used to teach in the Havana Instituto Superior de Arte. Among his pupils JL Prats, V. Rodriguez, L. Morales. In this colourful recording he sounds a bit emphatic but sober, his phrases are nicely shaped and the shades well depicted. The video is illustrated with some of my beloved fotos that I have taken in Brazil, in Greece and Argentina. These two dances were part of the soundtrack of the wonderful cuban-spanish-mexican film Fresa y Chocolate, 1993, (Strawberry and Chocolate) by Tomás Gutiérez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío based on a short story written by Senel Paz. Esta semana se dio a conocer del hallazgo de una tumba de la cultura zoque en la zona arqueológica de Chiapa de Corzo. Desde Enero pasado comenzaron las excavaciones en un montículo localizado en este sitio arqueológico, y en días recientes se descubrió la tumba de un alto dignatario en la base de la pirámide, que data del año 700 antes de Cristo. Arqueólogos de instituciones como la National Geographic Society, la Fundación Nuevo Mundo y el Instituto Nacional de Arqueología e Historia colaboran en este proyecto, y es Lynneth Lowe, del Cento de Estudios mayas de la UNAM, quien nos explica la importancia de este descubrimiento, ya que la cultura es una de las más antiguas de mesoamérica y es la tumba más antigua hallada bajo una pirámide.

Google Tech Talk July 29, 2008 ABSTRACT Dr. Elmer E. Huerta is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Latin American Cancer Research Coalition (LACRC) and a member of the LACRC Steering Committee. He is currently the President of the American Cancer Society and the Founder and Director of the Cancer Preventorium at the Washington Cancer Institute in the Washington Hospital Center, the only cancer prevention/screening service for Latinos in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. The goal of the clinic is to encourage preventive screenings; therefore, the clinic is open to patients who do not have any disease symptoms. Born in Peru, Dr. Huerta obtained his medical degree at the University of San Marcos in 1981. Trained in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology in Peru, he completed a fellowship in oncology research at the Johns Hopkins Oncology Center in 1988, a residence in internal medicine at St. Agnes Hospital in 1991, an MPH at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1992, and a fellowship in Cancer Prevention and Control at the National Cancer Institute in 1994. Through his educational work, Dr. Huerta has gained a high degree of respect and trust in the Hispanic community at the local, national, and international levels. Since 1989, Dr. Huerta's daily radio show Cuidando su Salud (Taking Care of Your Health) has provided daily disease prevention and health promotion messages to Hispanics on a Washington, DC-area Spanish-language station.
