www.worldviewz.net On our last day in Antigua we saw this band playing in the central park. I thought it would be nice to combine their music with imagery from our journey in Guatemala to say thanks to the Guatemalan people and culture. We had an awesome journey and I would highly recommend Guatemala the Mayan Ruins and the culture of Guatemala for anyone interested in visiting a beautiful country.

Semana Santa, or Easter's Holy Week in Antigua, Guatemala 2010 sees some of the most elaborate sawdust carpets in the world - made out of fruit, flowers, and more, these carpets are incredibly unique. I blog about traditional festivals from all over the world on my travel blog: alittleadrift.com --- and Antigua's Holy Week is one of those events that will stick with me for my entire life because of the skill, devotion, and sincerity of the entire week of celebratons. The alfombras are probably the most well known aspect of the event because they are elaborately detailed and can get incredibly ornate too even though they are all made of sawdust, flowers, palm fronds, and in one case one of the carpets was even made out of chocolate! Neighbors and sometimes a whole street will team up nearly a year ahead of time to plan out the next year's event and carpet. These carpets can span 500 feet or more, right in the middle of the road, and take upwards of 15 hours for the more elaborate carpets you'll see during Holy Week. Stencils are used and laid on top of the sawdust to outline the delicate designs, and layers of sawdust and images chosen to celebrate Christ and his sacrifice. The last thing you see of a carpet are the feet of the people in the parades slowly scuttling through the soft sawdust, instantly destroying these ephemeral works of art. As they are trampled and the parade moves on to the next street, the cleaners follow up behind and huge trucks dispose of the sawdust ...

On this special night hosted by both the French and Spanish Cultural Centres in Cairo in celebration of Ramadan 2007, the Moroccan-French Ibn Arabi Ensemble play together with the Spanish Música Antigua Quintet of Eduardo Paniagua. The two bands were flewn in from Paris and Madrid to perform at different venues in Cairo including some medieval palaces and caravanserais in the Old City. The Ibn Arabi Ensemble sang the Sufi poetry from Ibn Arabi, Ibn El-Farid and Al-Shushtari from Andalucía, North Africa and Egypt alongside Arabo-Andalucían music. Música Antigua Quintet revives medieval Mudéjar music of the post-Reconquista era reflecting the wealth of Arabo-Islamic influence on Spanish culture. After several amazing performances on this stage at the Centre Français du Culture et de Cooperation, the two bands combined their music in this performance alongside the famous Sudanese oudist whose name skips my mind.
