| | Semana Santa in Antigua: Making the Beautiful Carpets Duration : 149 Seconds Semana Santa, or Easter's Holy Week in Antigua, Guatemala 2010 sees some of the most elaborate sawdust carpets in the world - made out of fruit, flowers, and more, these carpets are incredibly unique. I blog about traditional festivals from all over the world on my travel blog: alittleadrift.com --- and Antigua's Holy Week is one of those events that will stick with me for my entire life because of the skill, devotion, and sincerity of the entire week of celebratons. The alfombras are probably the most well known aspect of the event because they are elaborately detailed and can get incredibly ornate too even though they are all made of sawdust, flowers, palm fronds, and in one case one of the carpets was even made out of chocolate! Neighbors and sometimes a whole street will team up nearly a year ahead of time to plan out the next year's event and carpet. These carpets can span 500 feet or more, right in the middle of the road, and take upwards of 15 hours for the more elaborate carpets you'll see during Holy Week. Stencils are used and laid on top of the sawdust to outline the delicate designs, and layers of sawdust and images chosen to celebrate Christ and his sacrifice. The last thing you see of a carpet are the feet of the people in the parades slowly scuttling through the soft sawdust, instantly destroying these ephemeral works of art. As they are trampled and the parade moves on to the next street, the cleaners follow up behind and huge trucks dispose of the sawdust ... | | Semana Santa Processions in Antigua, Guatemala Duration : 208 Seconds The Semana Santta parades in Antigua for Holy Week celebrations and processional reenactments are some of the most unique and amazing Easter activities in the world. The Processions reenact the last days of Christ and last for the whole of Semana Santa. The Holy Week in Christianity takes place the last week of lent and the week leading up to Easter. The celebrations in some parts of the world really take the week seriously and reenact the last days of Christ for the entire week leading up to Easter. For this to happen it means that locals sign up a year in advance to play a part in the elaborate reenactments and they act out all of the parts and roles that led to Christ being accused and crucified. The Roman soldiers come out and make accusations at midnight one of the nights, and throughout the week, as Good Friday, and Palm Sunday come and pass, the floats with Christ's image get more and more distressing. Each day the float depicts Christ and those surrounding the event on heavy (weighing a tonne in some cases) floats and in one of the stages before he was resurrected. Easter day is the day of joy and the parades are a lot more light-hearted with happy music a stark contrast to the sad and dreary tones as everyone was in mourning, incense and deep-throated songs set a somber mood for most of the days of the procession. As the processions spend hours winding through the streets of Antigua and other cities in the world, there are elborate alfombras, or carpets, lining ...
