Duration : 845 Seconds

The French invaded Algeria in 1830 until 1962. ***General Massu, Aussaresses, and then Colonel Bigeard were the military commanders during the 1957 Battle of Algiers. The following year, General Aussaresses confessed in his book "Services spéciaux, Algérie 1955-1957" (2001) to having engaged in torture and illegal executions, on direct orders from General Massu. Aussaresses declared that torture had been directly ordered by Guy Mollet's government***

French war crimes in Algeria
Duration : 512 Seconds

The Algerian war 1954-62 In 1954, Algeria's smouldering independence struggle erupted into a war. Just before, the French army had been forced to withdraw from Vietnam following its historical defeat at Dien Bien Phu. France moved the largest part of the Foreign Legion to Algeria, its largest and oldest colony. As the attacks mounted by the FLN increased during 1954, the French government decided it would not abandon Algeria, which had been a French colony since 1830. For the first time conscripts were despatched to a colony, and by mid 1956 half a million French soldiers were stationed on Algerian soil. By 1962, 1.7 million French soldiers had fought in the Algerian war. Over 25000 of these were killed and 60000 wounded, while on the Algerian side, over half a million died. Despite these enormous numbers, for a long time no one was officially allowed to use the word "war". One spoke only of the "events in Algeria" or of "preserving order" in the three Algerian provinces. Only in October 1999 did the French National Assembly (parliament) decided to officially permit the term "Algerian War".

Camus, The Nobel Prize & Algerian War (documentary)
Duration : 383 Seconds

Camus & The Algerian War of Independence. This documentary is about Camus' struggle on the question of Islamic Independence in Algeria and the Pied Noir or French inhabitants. From 1955 to 1956, Camus wrote for L'Express. In 1957 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature "for his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times", not for his novel The Fall, published the previous year, but for his writings against capital punishment in the essay "Réflexions sur la Guillotine" (Reflections on the Guillotine). When he spoke to students at the University of Stockholm, he defended his apparent inactivity in the Algerian question; he stated that he was worried about what might happen to his mother, who still lived in Algeria. This led to further ostracism by French left-wing intellectuals.

Great vintage footage and interviews of veteran French men who were drafted, of Harkis (Algerians fighting for the French) and European settlers who had to leave Algeria after it became independent again in 1962. Many Algerians in turn immigrated to France and all who were involved one way or another in the fight bear the scars of the conflict even to this day. Until 1999 this war was unacknowledged by the French government. It was only after Jacques Chirac recognized it officially that the oppressive silence was lifted and people concerned started to talk about it. What strikes me the most is to see old men weep? Men are supposed not to let their emotions out but how good is it for a society when mental agony remains a taboo subject? How good can such a man be to his wife and children? To society at large? What values will he transmit to the generation that is following him if essential issues of human rights expressed through war and foreign policy cannot be addressed ...

A Very Dirty War - Algeria
Duration : 1053 Seconds

New evidence that the Algerian government may be manipulating the country's horrific cycle of violence. Algeria's bloody civil war has claimed 75000 lives since the government cancelled the elections won by the Islamic fundamentalist party, the FIS, in 1992. Now a former Algerian diplomat Mohammed Larbi Zitout has defected, accusing the government of wanting to perpetuate the war, in order to maintain power and control of the country's vast oil and gas riches. Women weep at a graveside, mourning a recent night-time massacre of men, women and children. The government calls it a war between good and evil, blaming Islamic extremists for the massacres. The stories of lonely widows echo each other in every detail - nobody understands why the Islamists are killing civilians. Human Rights Advocate Selima Ghezal says Europe could do a lot. more. Moutefa Bouchachia, another Human Rights Lawyer says he believes the GIA, the radical armed Islamic group, has been infiltrated to ensure conflict continues.

WAR WITHOUT IMAGES - ALGERIA, I KNOW THAT YOU KNOW
Duration : 5436 Seconds

WAR WITHOUT IMAGES is the return of photographer Michael von Graffenried to Algeria, a country which, between 1991 and 2000, he visited incognito, taking pictures of people with a hidden camera. During that time before 9/11, Algeria was shaken by a civil war between the government and islamic extremists in which about 200000 people lost their lives. In a land where Islamic terrorists executed more than sixty journalists and photographers in 1993 and 94. The result is a film that holds a mirror to contemporary Algeria: a crossed, contradictory, complex place where laughter and tears intermingle. It is a country that wants both to live and to forget its tragedy and which is still looking for its identity, somewhere between East and West. A film by Mohammed Soudani and Michael von Graffenried Amka Films Productions, vo english subtitles
