An Islamic extremist who boasted of killing seven people to strike back at France died Thursday after jumping from his window, gun in hand, in a fierce shootout with police, a French minister said. French school shooting suspect Mohamed Merah had been arrested for bomb making in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar in 2007 but broke out of jail months later after a daring Taliban prison break, the director of prisons in Kandahar. Merah was detained by security services on Dec. 19, 2007 and was sentenced to three years in jail for planting bombs in Kandahar province, the Taliban's birthplace. Other reports said the suspect trained with Pakistani Taliban militants before going to Afghanistan to fight with the insurgents. According to the French Interior Minister Claude Gueant, the suspect was followed for several years by France's domestic intelligence service. President Nicolas Sarkozy, speaking after meeting Jewish and Muslim leaders at the Elysée palace in Paris following news of the police action, said: I congratulate the police for the speed of their inquiry and pay tribute to the exceptional action of the forces of order. Daniel Benjamin calls on Sahel working group for cooperation against terrorism ALGIERS- Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the US Department of State Daniel Benjamin urged Wednesday in Algiers the Global Counterterrorism Forum's Sahel working group to learn from each others and to work together to build cooperation and capacity to counter terrorism threat in the region. "We know what can be adapted to one country cannot be to another. But we can learn a lot from each other so we work together to build cooperation and capacity to respond to the terrorist threat in the region," Benjamin said at the opening session of the meeting. He noted the importance of taking into consideration the different views on every issue, but those present here have similar views, he said that there are urgent needs and challenges that are not addressed and that each country or organization have found the unique expertise to contribute. The US official said that through this working group he hopes to have a clearer picture of the challenges of capacity building and priorities in the regions. "We hope to have a clearer picture of the challenges of capacity building and priorities in the region and mobilize expertise, resources and political will to address them," he added. The arrests come just a week after an Algerian Frenchman Mohammad Merah killed 7 people in Toulouse. Police have been hunting Merah's accomplices, but no direct links with him have been confirmed. Adlène Hicheur, who worked at the CERN research centre in Geneva, Switzerland, is on trial in Paris on charges of criminal association as part of a terrorist entreprise. Police arrested him after intercepting emails he wrote to an alleged al-Qaeda contact. Hicheur has spent the past two years in custody awaiting trial. His lawyer Patrick Baudouin said of the e-mail exchange: "The prosecutor tried to prove those words were actually showing an intention to concretely act, helping to prepare or directly preparing a terrorist action. This is exactly what I contested, because Adlène Hicheur's words hadn't mentioned any precise planning of anything in particular." When asked by euronews if police had identified the alleged Al-Qaeda contact, he said: "This person has not been formally identified, but throughout the investigation they said it appears to be Mustapha Debchi, who is allegedly a senior member of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, based in Algeria. "But if you are sure about his identity, you don't say 'it appears to be' -- you say it is that person in question." Hicheur's trial comes more than one week after French president Nicolas Sarkozy proposed to make repeated surfing of extremist websites a criminal offence following the Toulouse shootings.
