ALGIERS, ALGERIA The ballots have been counted, the vote certified, and the results of Algerias presidential election are in: sitting President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will come back for a third time after winning in a landslide that has observers here rolling their eyes. Polling stations in the capital were largely empty on Thursday, and most Algerians appeared listlessly resigned to a third term for their president, who has held office since 1999. But the Ministry of the Interior announced Friday that nearly 75 percent of voters had gone to the polls, handing the presidency back to Bouteflika by an eye-popping 90.24 percent. His five challengers split the remainder among themselves, with Louisa Hanoun, the candidate of the Communist Workers Party, taking second place with 604258 votes and 4.22 percent of the total. Rate of voter turnout in some provinces, the government announced, were also startlingly high: more than 97 percent of the mountainous eastern province of Khenshala is said to have gone to the polls, as is about 95 percent of the province of Ain Defla and nearly 65 percent of Algiers, the capital. Department of State Special Advisor for International Disability Rights Judith E. Heumann visited Algeria October 16-19 as part of a regional awareness tour. Ms. Heumann also visited Tunisia and will visit Jordan and Qatar after Algeria. The goal of her visit was to draw attention to this important issue and recognize Algeria's ratification of the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. During her visit, Ms. Heumann held meetings with several Algerian officials, including the Director of Political Affairs and International Security at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Education, and the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Solidarity & Family to discuss reinforcement of cooperation and exchange of expertise between Algeria and the US to promote full participation of persons with disabilities in civil, political, economic, social and cultural life. Ms. Heumann also visited several humanitarian and social associations including the Darna women shelter, a center for mentally disabled persons, and a training center for deaf and mute persons. An interesting piece here. I don't have too much info on this one, as the record is mostly printed in Arabic. These are the first two songs from side 1, a live performance by The Egyptian Society for the Conservation of Arab Music, led by Professor Abdelhalim Nouira. The LP, "3ème Festival de Musique Andalouse Alger 1972 - Vol. 2," is a live recording taken from this festival, held in Algiers, in 1972. The songs are in the malouf style, most likely being from Tunisa (or Algeria). These songs are notable for the use of, what is considered to be, a more modern arrangement, with greater instrumentation and the use of female vocals. Considered to be a break from more traditonal arrangements. Malouf (Arabic: مالوف‎ Ma'lūf) is a genre of music in the Andalusian classical tradition of Algeria, Libya and Tunisia after the Conquest of Spain in the 15th century. It was revived in the 1920s by the French musicologist Baron Rodolphe d'Erlanger. Though in its modern form, malouf is likely very dissimilar to any music played more than four centuries ago, it does have its roots in Spain and Portugal, and is closely related to genres with a similar history throughout North Africa, including malouf's Libyan cousin, Algerian gharnati and Moroccan ala or Andalusi.
