Algeria govt cuts food prices after deadly riots
Duration : 56 Seconds

Four days of rioting in Algeria has forced the government to slash the price of staple foods in an effort to stop the street violence that has killed at least two people and injured several hundred more. But even as ministers were holding a crisis meeting to decide what to do, more trouble was erupting in two cities east of the capital Algiers. The government said it will cut import duties on basics like sugar and cooking oil and offered reassurances that it would not leave its people to the mercy of rising food prices. ... www.euronews.net

BBCWnews - Protests intensifying across Algeria over higher food prices
Duration : 60 Seconds

Rising prices for food staples like milk and sugar have sparked protests in Algeria's capital and beyond, and some fear more violence will erupt as more people join the crowds on the streets. "They are burning tires, breaking into buildings, breaking everything. ... We can hear the screams," said journalist Lania Tagzout of the demonstrators, who are mostly young and male. Adding fuel to the protesters' anger are the high rates of unemployment and housing issues, socioeconomic problems that have been festering for some time. The government, which hasn't yet publicly responded to the protests, has blamed the rising prices and other issues on the global economic crisis. The demonstrations began Tuesday night, and are largely are unorganized, Tagzout said, without any clear leaders. There have been injuries among the protesters, as well as police, but authorities aren't disclosing any numbers, she said. Police aren't engaging the demonstrators so far, but are using tear gas to contain them. Friday, which is the day of prayer, could bring more throngs into the streets, since people don't work on that day. Demonstrators have blocked off some roads outside of the capital, Tagzout said. And even though businesses are shuttered and many people are staying off the streets in the capital, there's not much anger toward the protesters, she explained. "Everyone understands that things will only change through violence." CNN

Inside Story - 'Bring us sugar!'
Duration : 1489 Seconds

First it was Morocco, then Tunisia, and now it is Algeria's turn. Hundreds of Algerians have taken to the streets of the capital Algiers, some of them shouting "Bring us Sugar!" They are unhappy with the rising cost of food and, what they say, is a lack of opportunity in the country. They are directing their anger at the government - they do not understand why an oil rich country is unable to offer a decent life to its people. But as the anger spreads across North Africa, is it only about food prices and unemployment? And could the ongoing unrest lead to political turmoil?

Duration : 221 Seconds

How To Go To Heaven www.jesus-is-savior.com neweconomicperspectives.blogspot.com Just before the current global crisis hit, pension funding was, on average, doing well—thanks to the speculative bubble as well as to some deregulation that took place at the end of the Clinton administration that allowed pensions to gamble in more exotic instruments, and in riskier markets such as commodities. Previous to 2000, pensions could not buy commodities because these are purely speculative bets. There is no return to holding commodities unless their prices rise—indeed, holding them is costly. However, Goldman Sachs promoted investment in commodities as a hedge, on the basis that commodities prices are uncorrelated with equities. In the aftermath of the dot com collapse, that was appealing. (In truth, when managed money flows into an asset class that had previously been uncorrelated with other assets, that asset will become correlated. Hence, by marketing commodities Wall Street ensured a commodities bubble that would collapse along with everything else.) You know the rest of that story: pension funds poured into commodities and commodity futures, driving up prices of energy, metals, and food. As energy prices rose, Congress mandated biofuels—which added to pressures on food prices that contributed to starvation around the globe. The bubble popped in what is known as the great Mike Masters inventory liquidation, as pension funds pulled out of commodities on the fear that Congress was ...

Food rebellion as revolution's kindling. Raj Patel. Clip 1 of 12
Duration : 227 Seconds

Growing hunger and inequality create fertile ground for rupture and political rebellion by the poor. Patel traces some of the origins of the recent upsurge of popular power against oppression and injustice in North Africa to an Algerian food rebellion -- and points to South African research that demonstrates how similar conditions are being created here too.
