Soviet bombs unearthed gems in Afghanistan that no one knew exsisted. Bonita Chamberlin, a geologist, was asked to teach the locals how to mine the gems without setting off the explosives left behind. On subsequent visits she took tools and taught the Afghanistan women to make jewelry with the gems. Bonita sells the jewelry and all of the proceeds go to her humanitarian efforts which include schools, reforestation and irrigation projects.

A feature story on Deploy Peace over July 4th weekend. When the war in Iraq and Afghanistan broke out we wanted to do something to help our men and women who so bravely served our country. We decided to take retired B-52 Bomber and C130 Hercules once used to fly missions in Vietnam and Korea and create unique jewelry. Our jewelry shows support for our troops and honors the memory of those who died in this conflict. Proceeds from our sales are donated to the Fisher House Foundation. Once designed, our jewelry is engraved with our Deploy Peace design and an inspirational peace quote taken from people throughout history who also believed in the power of peace. Part of the proceeds from every necklace sold are donated to the Fisher House Foundation.

Years of war and exploitation have degraded many of Afghanistan's natural resources. But among the still highly prized assets is the lapis lazuli gemstone which has been mined in northern Afghanistan for 6000 years. The only pure source of the stone lies in Sar-i-Sang in the Kocha valley of northern Afghanistan. James Bays makes the dangerous journey to the mines and finds men who risk their lives to get to these gems. To get to the world's largest lapis lazuli mine - you have to go on a gruelling journey. It takes more than 12 hours from the nearest town by road, although there are no real roads to speak of. These are mountain passes - some them are extremely treacherous - and they can only be navigated slowly and extremely carefully. Finally, you drop down into the Kocha valley - and the mines at Sari-i-Sang, where a village has been built to house the hundreds of men involved in the search for lapis lazuli. The gemstone - actually a complex mineral made up of sodium and aluminium has been highly sought after for thousands of years. The deep ocean blue stones are on sale as jewellery and gift boxes in shops in Kabul, but much of the lapis mined in Northern Afghanistan is smuggled across the border to Pakistan. The village is the base camp for a highly lucrative, yet until recently a totally illegal, business. You are already at a high altitude here - before you start climbing to the mines themselves. Pippa Small, a highly respected British jewellery designer, explains how hearing about Rory Stewarts Turquoise Mountain Foundation inspired her to create designs that responded to Islamic and pre-Islamic Afghan styles within her distinctive personal style. Turquoise Mountain is engaged in development work, centred especially on old Kabul and on setting up skills and education projects so that Afghan people can help themselves. If you havent heard of Rory Stewart, rumoured to be played by Brad Pitt in an upcoming movie about his life, this National Geographic article tiny.cc is a good place to start. We got involved through a friend and journalist colleague, Kate Brothers, who had just joined Turquoise Mountain and who persuaded us that filming the launch of the jewellery collection could be Meconopsis Films contribution to their development work. We were happy to help. The project developed a life of its own, combining a record of the London launch with Pippa Small and Rory Stewart interviews and using stunning photographs from Susan Schulman (www.susanschulman.co.uk) from her visit to Afghanistan.
